Connected entered into discussions to address
aboriginal student absenteeism and the lack of a
town bus service in Lakes Entrance.
A partnership was formed and Lakes Entrance
schools were then engaged. Through the schools
students and families were surveyed to ascertain
and demonstrate the need for a town bus service.
Funding applications have been lodged to
Departments of Victorian Communities and
Infrastructure thus far without success. Currently
the proposal is sitting with the Gippsland Regional
Managers Forum and has been listed as a priority
project to be funded in 2006.
Buchan Bus N Freight is a passenger and freight
service currently operating three days per week-
Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It is the first time
a bus service has operated the 80km route to
Bairnsdale (one way) in 45 years.
This initiative is the first demand responsive service
in Victoria and aims to connect an isolated
community to a V/Line service three times per
week (Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday). The service
is demand responsive and will not run if there are
no bookings. This initiative provides an affordable
transport option ($4.20 one-way full fare) to
Mallacoota and surrounding district residents.
Protocols and access has been established with
Orbost Secondary College for post school students
to travel free on all school buses coming into
Orbost – 7 buses approximately.
The Principal of Buchan Primary school agreed to
allow free travel on the school bus for any post
school student needing to come into Buchan for
training and education purposes – 1 bus.
