Why Tooth Whitening
Toothpastes
Don’t Work
HEALTH
If you’re looking for that dazzling smile
and want to achieve it with teeth whitening
toothpastes, better save your money.
“They’re worthless,” Kira Watson,
registered dental hygienist at the office
of Fausto R. Prato, DDS located in
Stockton said in a private interview. “If
you want white teeth, the professional
kits or professional in-office whitening
treatments work. The problem (with the
toothpastes) is that they can be extra
abrasive and wear away the enamel
layer, which will then make teeth whitening
more difficult.”
But there’s more to this story about why
they don’t work.
Tooth Anatomy
The connection of abrasiveness to teeth
whitening is actually simple but you
have to understand a little about tooth
anatomy first.
The structure of a tooth has three primary
layers: the crown or enamel, the dentin,
and the pulp. The crown or enamel
of the tooth is the white visible part, and
it’s composed of a material harder than
bone. In fact, tooth enamel is the hardest
material found in the body.
The dentin layer is a yellow layer. This
layer is composed of tiny tubules that
connect to the nerve within the pulp.
It’s a sensitive layer, that is, sensitive to
what you do to the tooth.
Combine the exposure of the dentin
part of the tooth with normal everyday
stains on the enamel from coffee,
tea, chocolate, pomegranates,
blueberries, blackberries and other
foods and you have the recipe for
discolored, yellow teeth.
If you use a very abrasive toothpaste
that wears away the enamel
quicker in an attempt to remove
stains, you end up with a formula
for more stains that are harder
to remove.
And the big problem is that
many of the top teeth whitening
toothpastes are in fact,
abrasive.
And the pulp layer is the layer with
the blood vessels and nerves. The pulp
layer is also another sensitive layer.
How Teeth Whitening Toothpastes Affect
Tooth Anatomy
As we age, our enamel starts to wear thin.
The more you expose the dentin layer, the
more you expose the yellow color of that
layer, the dentin, of the tooth.
What’s a Consumer to Do?
To answer this question, your dentist is
really the best resource. However, there
are some recommendations you can
start initiating right now:
1 Since toothpastes are the lowest on
the totem pole of effectiveness at creating
whiter teeth, use a low abrasive
toothpaste and save your enamel.
2 Brush your teeth immediately after
eating. This will remove any stains that
resulted from eating or drinking foods
that have pigments that cause staining.
3 Consider professional teeth whitening
kits or professional laser teeth whitening.
These work quickly and often result
in teeth that are 7 to 10 shades lighter.
Then continue your good habits #1 and
#2 to maintain the brightness.
As the dental hygienist said, “Teeth whitening
toothpastes don’t work. They just
remove the external stains. When they’re
abrasive, they can cause problems. Your
best bet is to use the professional bleaching
agents obtained from the dentist.
They’re stronger and get the job done.”
