Following a comprehensive public consultation exercise, the Manchester Children’s Hospitals and Central Manchester Healthcare NHS Trusts were brought together to form the Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust, which was established on the 1st April 2001. The merger has provided the best opportunity for the £250m adult and children’s services re-development in central Manchester to be successfully delivered through the Government’s Private Finance Initiative. In addition to the preparatory work undertaken by the Trust Merger Project Team, we should recognise the leadership provided by the acting Directors and the contribution made by all staff in continuing to maintain and develop services whilst making the merger as seamless as possible. The development of organisational arrangements will continue through 2001/2002. The Trust will face some exciting challenges in delivering the Government’s modernisation agenda, the national NHS Plan, implementation of National Service Frameworks and we look forward to working closely with the newly formed Primary Care Trusts. During 2001, three short-listed bidders were identified to progress the development of the new adult and children’s hospital facilities. A decision on the preferred partner will be made by the Trust Board in early 2002. Work will then begin on what will eventually become one of the most comprehensive and exciting healthcare facilities in Europe. The Children’s Hospital and the Medical wing should be completed in 2006, with the Eye Hospital and women’s health facilities finished two years after that. The Commission for Health Improvement will visit the Trust during September and we welcome the opportunity of working with them to develop and improve our services. The year ahead will see a number of major service developments and improvements. On the Central site in September, to accommodate the transfer of services from Withington Hospital, a £9.7m acute medical unit with twin day-case theatre suite will open; a £6m, 706 space multi-storey car park will be completed in December to ease the car park congestion caused through increased activity and site development. Work has commenced on the £6.2m extension to the Clinical Sciences Building to re-provide an automation laboratory, Cytology Services transferred from The Christie Hospital and the Public Health Laboratory from Withington Hospital. This is scheduled to open in August 2002. Booth Hall Children’s Hospital has successfully bid for a state-of-the-art CT Scanner from the Government’s Modernisation monies which will be operational in November. By 2002 a £750k replacement cardio-catheterisation laboratory will have been installed at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. These new developments will enable our excellent and dedicated staff to continue to deliver a first class service. We are proud that throughout this busy period of change they have continued to deliver such high standards of care to our patients. Peter W.
