There’s an update from the UK’s largest choir, Rock Choir,
which recently celebrated its 10th year anniversary in
Birmingham with members or ‘Rockies’ as they are known
from the Littleborough group joining in a special parade at
the NEC.
On page 48 there’s an appeal from the RSPCA for Victor the
cat who was found very close to death at the side of the
road by a Rochdale resident. If you can help towards his vet
bills or make a donation, please get in touch with the
charity, contact details to be found in the article.
On page 49 Councillors Neil Butterworth and Allen Brett are
fighting back against the reduction of bus services in the
area and working with Greater Manchester Transport to
improve the services.
With Summer upon us and the long school holidays looming,
look out for the next magazine dropping through your
letterbox which will be the bumper double issue covering
both the months of August and September.
Local Care from a Local Company
The team at Home Instead Senior Care in Rochdale is passionate
about providing care to its clients which not only improves the
quality of their lives but those of their families too. The company
specialises in providing care for older people in their own homes.
Commenting on the service, David Bradshaw said, “We are passionate
about providing the highest standard of person-centred care. Our ethos
is simple – treat others as we would wish to be treated ourselves. In
doing this we are improving our clients’ quality of life and helping them
to remain in their own homes, leading an independent life.”
Home Instead clients have a care plan tailored specifically to their own
needs and the service is extremely flexible and ranges from help a few
hours a day to 24 hour care. Services can include personal care such as
assistance with bathing, dressing and medications; home help covering
housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties; and
companionship services that can involve everything from escorting clients
on visits or appointments to simple conversation and good company.
The company also provides a range of specialist services, which include
Alzheimer’s and dementia care, convalescence care and respite care.
Home Instead Caregivers complete a training programme designed by
national and international renowned dementia and Alzheimer's experts.
This means our Caregivers are provided with the latest in Alzheimer's
education and home care techniques, so clients are assured their loved
one is being cared for by a trusted professional.
The team at Home Instead knows that quality care cannot be delivered
in short, rushed visits so care calls are of a minimum 1 hour duration.
They also understand how important it is for clients to have the right
caregiver for their needs. Time is taken to
carefully match caregivers to clients so that they share common areas
of interest and can form an immediate bond.
Home Instead only employs the most caring, considerate and empathetic
caregivers – people to whom making a difference to the lives of others
is important. Caregivers are carefully selected, are CRB checked and
have to provide six references.
Home Instead Senior Care is committed to making a difference,
and regard it as a special privilege to look after people with love,
care and compassion - they take their responsibilities very
seriously indeed.
Carnival
Thousands of people lined the streets to watch Milnrow & Newhey Carnival and attend
the family fun day at Milnrow Memorial Park.
In its 47th year, the carnival parade was the largest parade for 40 years with
22 groups participating. Ten large floats made the carnival procession an
impressive sight. Captain Jack Sparrow led the parade followed by Milnrow
Brass Band and the carnival queens. One onlooker commented that they
thought the parade would never end! There were princesses and pirates,
fairy tale characters, under the sea themes, gnomes, Jesus Christ Superstar
themes, steel bands, street dancers, morris dancers, footballers, drama
groups and all kinds of fancy dress.
A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all. The rain held off and the sun
came out to everyone's amazement! The sense of camaraderie and
goodwill in the village was evident as the local community came out to
support the day.
At Milnrow Memorial Park a new larger fun fair was in the
park with a full range of rides catering for all ages from
toddlers to adults. The rides included waltzers, ghost train,
teacups, toddler train, trampolines, huge inflatables, hook a
duck and a firm favourite of the day: the superb flying chairs
ride. Children and adults alike enjoyed paintball, which is a
new addition to the event. It went down so well it is already
booked for next year!
40
The entertainment was top notch this
year. Thanks to Vibe Youth Music of
Rochdale for providing the
professional sound system, highly
acclaimed group The Scattering and
the hugely entertaining group
Sunday@One was enjoyed by all.
Milnrow Brass Band played at the
park and a Az Kabile Tribal Belly

Dancers did two fantastic displays.
At the park there was a wide
variety of stalls including toy stalls,
book stalls, face painting, hair
accessories, handbag stalls and
crazy golf. The committee was
delighted to support the launch of
two new local businesses at the event
- Mrs Barbers Bakery who offers a
selection of delicious unique cakes
and biscuits and Busy Beans Coffee , a
5 star rated mobile speciality coffee
and tea business, perfect for any event.
In addition, Kidz Club were on hand
with craft stalls for the children to
participate in along with nail painting and sand art.
A prize give away took place in the afternoon, with meal
vouchers for The Cedar Tree and The Italian Job, numerous
bottles of wine kindly donated by PTG Holroyd, Tesco and the
Co-operative Food Milnrow, bag of cookies donated by Subway,
children's toys, cakes from Mrs Barbers Bakery, hot
a stones therapy session at Abbey Rose Holistic
Therapies, glasses case and voucher from Yates and
Suddell Opticians, a gift voucher for Do Dig Doggy
and a £50 on the spot cash prize.
The committee would like to thank all who took part
in the parade. We are always amazed by the effort
put in to the costumes and float
decoration and we are immensely
grateful for their participation.
Finally, the committee would like to extend its gratitude to all who
watched the parade and attended the family fun day. The date for
next year's carnival is Saturday 11th June and we always aim for
istheattractionofsittinginabaransweringrandomquestions
overapintofrealale?
For some it’s the appeal of a relatively cheap night out, the cost of
the putting on the quiz is comparatively cheap compared to a band or
a DJ and it attracts regular teams. Some people come midweek because
it’s a chance to catch up with friends and it’s simply a social night out.
Some people must win at all costs and despite the relatively low value
of the prizes (four pints of beer for example), it’s the winning that
counts. I have met quizzers in the past who live for quiz night. It is
their one chance to shine, be the best, be top of the tree and show how
good they are remembering information. And that’s the key to winning,
remembering something you have been told, seen, read, heard or
experienced. Quiz nights are rarely about logic, intelligence of problem
solving; it’s about recall. And that makes it a great leveller. You can be
a scientist, lawyer or holy person, but if you didn’t see “Who do you
think you are?” featuring Barbara Windsor in 2007 then you can’t
answer the question.
Competitive quizzing is on the rise too. It doesn’t take more than a
quick Google to find your nearest pub quiz league, regional quiz event,
British, European or even International Grand Prix event. (Yes, they
compete in Grand Prixs across the world now) And they are seriously
hard too. This is the world of Kevin Ashman and Pat Gibson from the
Eggheads and Mark Labbett and Anne Hegerty from the Chase-
Professional Quizzers. I have always admired the level of commitment
these guys and gals put into their quizzing. I consider myself to be a
pretty average quizzer who can hold his own, but when I hear that one
of the quiz elite are revising “Belgian painters” of “Nobel economics
proze winners” or “Olympic table tennis medal winners”, you know
you’re out of your depth.
I prefer to stick to quiz and gameshows on the TV myself. Since 1996
I’ve appeared on almost 40 different shows and won a few quid on the
way too. It’s John Constable by the way- the answer to the question
above. I got that one on “Who wants to be a Millionaire?” Did you get
it? How confident were you? Enough to gamble £20,000? I will tell
you more about that another time.
Andy Kelly runs the pub quiz at the Flying Horse Hotel each Tuesday
Night at 9pm. (Other pub quizzes are available!)
CRIMEPREVENTIONTIPS
CRIMEPREVENTIONTIPS/ADVICE
BICYCLESECURITYANDACCIDENTS
With warmer and dryer weather upon us, we need to be
aware of those who wish to travel via a bicycle.
OnTheRoads:-
Drivers, take extra care when over-taking a cyclist and
make sure there is enough room for the both of you on the
road.
Cyclists try and keep to the curb as much as possible and
stay in a straight line! This reduces the risk of someone
hitting you. Make sure if you are cycling that you are
wearing the gear that gets you noticed especially your
helmet. Don’t forget to use your hand signals.
OffTheRoads:-
Lock it or lose it! Use a sufficient lock which isn’t easily
picked or broken or even use two! Look at D locks and
cable locks. When locking your bicycle to something, try
and fill the lock which makes it harder for people to break
as well as deterring them off your property.
Think about where you put your bicycle. If out and about
use cycle sheds/stands where they can be seen by the
public but when at home, lock it away
in your shed/garage.
REGISTER your bicycle! Take a
photo and make a note of the
make, model and serial number.
Stick it on www.immobilise.com
Stranger Awareness
GuideforParents,
Guardians and
Carers
With the summer
approaching
fast, more and
more people
are going to be out and about. The majority of strangers
your child will meet whether that is on the streets, in the
park, in shops or around their local communities, most are
normal pleasant people. On the other hand a small
proportion of strangers are not. With daylight lasting longer
in the evening there is a need to reinforce awareness
amongst children coming into contact with strangers faceto-face
and how to deal with such situations. A new
‘Stranger Awareness Guide’ has been launched containing
straightforward information and advice on how to keep
you child safe. Within the guide there is the encouragement
of role-play between parent and child to practice, discuss
and see the reaction of their encounter. This enables
parents to see how they do in an uncomfortable or difficult
situation. Your child will also be able to differentiate
between the ‘good’ strangers (good being trusted
community members e.g. PCSOs, teachers, paramedics)
and the ‘bad’ strangers and what behaviours are involved.
We encourage parents, guardians and carers to take the
time and read this guide as well as share it with friends
and family as this may just make a difference and make
your community safer.
Follow this link to review the guide and print off as a handout
for future reference.
MILNROWCARNIVAL
Hundreds of people turned out for The Milnrow and
Newhey Carnival as it celebrated its 47th year on Saturday
(13 June), setting off from Haugh Lane, Newhey
and proceeding through Milnrow to the
Memorial Park where a summer festival
took place.
With the sun shining for most of the
afternoon, families and children spent
the day enjoying the numerous
activities.
POLICENEWSFLASHMILNROW/NEWHEY
AntiSocialBehaviour
With the summer months approaching fast, Anti-Social
Behaviour starts to become more of an issue. This is
primarily due to youths going outside more with warmer
weather and trying to keep themselves occupied although
in the wrong nature. With this in mind this is one of the
main priorities of ours which we will continue to monitor.
Alongside this local officers and PCSOs will be focussing
on Milnrow Park during their routine patrol, especially
during evenings and weekends.
CrimeFiguresforthepastmonth
In the past month there has been eight cases of domestic
burglary, six cases of burglary other than those relating to
a dwelling, eight cases of criminal damage, four cases of
theft from a vehicle and two cases of theft of a vehicle.
There has also been one case of robbery and two cases of
theft of a pedal cycle.
The 2 bikes were stolen from a garage in Milnrow on
Wednesday 3rd June 2015-4th June 2015 overnight.
They are high value bikes and very distinctive in their looks.
The photograph of the Ghost bike is how it was before it
was painted. When it was stolen, it was Red and Black.
Please can people get in touch with the police if they have
seen the bikes anywhere/bought them or been offered to
buy them?
To help us identify those responsible for the issues in your
area please get in touch.
RSPCA – APPEAL FOR VICTOR
Victor was found at the side of the road by a very
kind man who picked him up and took him to the
vets. He was very close to death when he was
found.
We are looking for help towards his vet bills, to
make a donation you can visit our website and
make a donation on line at rspca-rochdale.org.uk
or you can call in to any of our charity shops or the
animal centre on Redcross Street.
Victor is not microchipped
or neutered.
Unneutered male cats
wander after females
and will travel a long
way to find a female
cat. If Cats are not
micro-chipped it is
difficult to find their
owners. We encourage
all pet owners to get
their animals microchipped
and neutered. We micro-chip dogs, cats,
rabbits and ferrets here at the
animal centre for £12. You do
not need an appointment just
call in during opening times
11.30 to 3.30 every day except
Wednesday when we are
closed.
On The Busses!
As we are all aware government cuts have devastated our local bus routes and
the most vulnerable are taking the brunt of the reductions in services. Two ward
councillors in Milnrow and Newhey are fighting back and have organised
activity with Transport for Greater Manchester to improve the services. A mail
drop in affected areas of the Ring & Ride scheme will show residents how to
access the service and the
development of; Local Link
will also provide a door to
door service for some
residents.
