This practice encouragesparticipants to speak <strong>in</strong> several languages with o<strong>the</strong>r colleagues <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> group.1.5. <strong>Multil<strong>in</strong>gual</strong>document managementIn GDF SUEZ, all official documents that are published at a global level are translated <strong>in</strong>to 7 languages,<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> language of <strong>the</strong> country where <strong>the</strong> document has been written. The languages are French,English, German, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, and <strong>the</strong> language of <strong>the</strong> country of orig<strong>in</strong>. If documentsare related to worldwide agreements, <strong>the</strong>y are translated <strong>in</strong>to all <strong>the</strong> languages of <strong>the</strong> countries<strong>in</strong>volved. In o<strong>the</strong>r cases, <strong>the</strong> document is written <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> language of <strong>the</strong> targeted countries only.14
2.1. Use of languageresources andmultil<strong>in</strong>gualterm<strong>in</strong>ologiesThe SynerTranslation department manages a database conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> 5/6 languages onenergy and water. This database is regularly updated and available onl<strong>in</strong>e for employees through <strong>the</strong>GDF SUEZ Intranet portal. Moreover, technical glossaries <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e translations <strong>in</strong> 6languages are also available on its <strong>in</strong>tranet.2.3. Corporatelanguage tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g andlearn<strong>in</strong>gGDF SUEZ aims to support language tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g and l<strong>in</strong>guistic diversity through corporate orexternal language tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. About 30 % of employees (all profiles <strong>in</strong>cluded) take regular languageclasses <strong>in</strong> GDF SUEZ. Genu<strong>in</strong>e importance is attached to be<strong>in</strong>g able to communicate <strong>in</strong> severallanguages <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> group. There have been positive experiences based on <strong>the</strong> concept of"<strong>in</strong>tercomprehension" (studied by academics at <strong>the</strong> University of Grenoble), a method that <strong>in</strong>volvesunderstand<strong>in</strong>g a text written <strong>in</strong> structurally and grammatically close languages, such as Romancelanguages (Italian, Spanish, Romanian, French, Swiss Romansh, Quebec French) on <strong>the</strong> basis ofcommon aspects and vocabulary. This approach is also l<strong>in</strong>ked to performance <strong>in</strong>dicators and to returnof <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> traditional classes. It allows employees to reap <strong>the</strong> benefits of a more rapid,multil<strong>in</strong>gual approach, by boost<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir autonomy and by reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> need for <strong>in</strong>-house or outsourcedtranslation services.2.4. Corporate / <strong>in</strong>houselanguageservices departmentBased <strong>in</strong> Brussels, <strong>the</strong> SynerTranslation department (Synergy Translation) manages translation and<strong>in</strong>terpretation needs with 15 full-time employees. This corporate department deals with all requestsmade by GDF SUEZ employees for document translation and <strong>in</strong>terpretation. Every year, thisdepartment handles more than 100 000 pages on average (represent<strong>in</strong>g 40 % of <strong>the</strong> global productionof <strong>the</strong> pages translated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> group GDF SUEZ). The average budget is estimated at a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 8figures (some millions of Euros). The SynerTranslation department also provides <strong>in</strong>terpretation serviceswith <strong>in</strong>-house <strong>in</strong>terpreters or is assisted by external <strong>in</strong>terpreters by means of outsourc<strong>in</strong>g.2.5. Integration ofmultil<strong>in</strong>gual onl<strong>in</strong>edevices and toolsRESULTSGDF SUEZ Web TV <strong>in</strong> French and EnglishThe « Cellule Watch » department is responsible for monitor<strong>in</strong>g and deliver<strong>in</strong>g strategic multil<strong>in</strong>gual<strong>in</strong>formation to GDF SUEZ managers. This department carries out a daily generic watch for <strong>the</strong> wholegroup <strong>in</strong> French and English, and provides on-demand watch services which are managed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>language of <strong>the</strong> client. The Cellule Watch is located <strong>in</strong> Paris and Brussels. Every day <strong>the</strong>SynerTranslation department receives all relevant <strong>in</strong>formation from <strong>the</strong> Watch department. Thiscollaboration leads to optimum management of translation needs for <strong>the</strong> articles com<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> watchservice.For GDF SUEZ, multil<strong>in</strong>gualism is directly l<strong>in</strong>ked to mobility and bus<strong>in</strong>ess opportunities. Moreover, it takes <strong>in</strong>to consideration suchfailure factors as stress or cultural barriers. For GDF SUEZ employees reality is about mix<strong>in</strong>g 4 or 5 different languagesthroughout <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g day without totally master<strong>in</strong>g any of <strong>the</strong>se languages. In GDF SUEZ multil<strong>in</strong>gualism is part of <strong>the</strong>framework for diversity and social solidarity. <strong>Multil<strong>in</strong>gual</strong>ism can be found at all levels and with<strong>in</strong> all functions of <strong>the</strong> company, todifferent degrees Today, <strong>the</strong>re are no more gaps <strong>in</strong> job profiles.
