SECTION 8- UNIVERSAL CRITERIAUNIVERSAL CRITERIA SIXA majority of the corridor must exhibit the qualifying resources. These resources must beas continuous as possible, for the present and the future.The corridor’s intrinsic resources are distributed throughout the corridor. Theentire length of the roadway is considered an important recreational resourcedue to its popularity with recreational and competitive cyclists, as well asmotorcyclists and Sunday drivers.The northern third of the corridor contains Sugarloaf Mountain and a LakeWales Ridge remnant scrub site with several species of threatened andendangered plants and animals. The St Johns River Water ManagementDistrict’s Lake Apopka North Shore Restoration Area, Bear and Wolf’s HeadSprings, and approximately 2 ½ miles of Lake Apopka shoreline arecontained within this section of the corridor.The central third of the corridor contains another Lake Wales Ridge remnantscrub site, the 1,000 acre Lost Swamp and about four miles of shoreline, theunincorporated community of Ferndale, and the Town of Montverde. Withinthe Town of Montverde, the Byway bisects the scenic and historic campus ofthe Montverde Academy.Within the southern third of the corridor can be found Compton’s Hammock,the Woodlands Camp, the Gourdneck of Lake Apopka and Gourdneck(Apopka) Springs. This area also contains approximately seven miles of LakeApopka shoreline. Within the Gourdneck is a bird rookery where five State of<strong>Florida</strong> listed Species of Special Concern nest. During the planning phase forthe extension of the South Lake Trail, several threatened and endangeredspecies of plants were identified within the trail corridor.The Lake Apopka Basin Planning Initiative, The Friends of Lake Apopka, andthe CAG, are all working to protect and enhance these resources for thefuture.72
