WVDP Phase 1 CSAPH.7 Conceptual Site ModelHistorical WMA 9 site activities have primarily included open land surface storage and storage ofcement solidified radioactive waste in steel drums within the Drum Cell. Although no significantreleases have been reported for this area, it is possible that there were releases associated withstorage activities. These would likely have been low level releases; these would have beenconfined to surface soils. There is the possibility that the construction of the current configurationof hardstands might have buried surface contamination that existed prior to their construction. There is also the possibility that contamination may have found its way into the surface drainagefeatures that drain the WMA 9 area into Franks Creek. The only buried infrastructure expected within the WMA 9 area would be associated withelectrical lines. Subsurface soil contamination associated with these lines is not considered asignificant concern since there is little historical evidence of significant surface soil impacts.Figure H.15 shows the current CSM for WMA 9 surface soils.H.8 WMA 9-Specific Characterization Goals• Evaluate Appropriateness of the Current List of Radionuclides of Interest (ROI).• Explore the Possibility of Surrogate ROI.• Determine Extent of Surface Contamination.• Identify the Presence/Absence of Subsurface Soil Contamination.• Identify Soil Waste Stream Characteristics.• Obtain Data to Support Phase 2 Planning.H.9 CSAP Pre-Remediation Data Collection and Associated Decision-MakingCSAP pre-remediation data collection will consist of a number of components described in moredetail below.Rev. 1 H-5
