DBMS Server EnhancementsIncremental RollforwarddbThe incremental rollforwarddb feature allows the journals from a database tobe incrementally applied, as they are generated, to a backup copy of thedatabase.This feature can be used to minimize downtime in the event that the backupdatabase is needed for disaster recovery.For this feature, two new options are added to the rollforwarddb command:• -incremental• -norollbackTo apply journals incrementally1. Start the incremental rollforwarddb by issuing the following command:rollforwarddb dbname +c -j -incremental2. Discover and apply new journals by issuing the following command:rollforwarddb dbname -c +j -norollback -incrementalThe database remains inconsistent and readonly. There may be opentransactions.3. Discover and apply new journals and roll back open transactions by issuingthe following command:rollforwarddb dbname -c +j -rollback -incrementalThe -rollback flag ends the incremental rollforwarddb, and the database ismarked consistent and updatable.For details on the flags, see the rollforwarddb command description in theCommand Reference Guide.Improved Exception HandlingException handling in the DBMS Server is improved, resulting in betterresponsiveness when a user interrupts a process, removes a session, or abortsa query using iimonitor.Increased Precision for Decimal Data TypeThe maximum precision for the decimal type is increased from 31 digits to 39digits. The resulting byte size of decimal columns is increased from amaximum of 16 bytes to a maximum of 20 bytes.148 Migration Guide
DBMS Server EnhancementsImproved Performance of String ComparisonsThe performance of comparisons involving char and varchar values isimproved.Unicode Uppercase and LowercaseIngres supports uppercase and lowercase operations on Unicode data typesnchar, nvarchar, and long nvarchar.Fetch First n and Offset nThe OFFSET clause and FETCH FIRST clause on the SELECT statement can beused to return a subset of rows from a result set.Users can code the “n” value of a FETCH FIRST n or OFFSET n specification in aSELECT statement as a host language variable in embedded SQL applications,or as a parameter or local variable in a database procedure.This feature is useful in Web-style applications that page results back to theuser, as in the results from using a web search engine.For example, the following query returns rows starting from the 25th row ofthe result set:SELECT * FROM MYTABLE ORDER BY COL1 OFFSET 25For example, the following query fetches only the first 10 rows of the resultset:SELECT * FROM MYTABLE ORDER BY COL1 FETCH FIRST 10 ROWS ONLYA query can use any combination of the ORDER BY, OFFSET, and FETCH FIRSTclauses, but in that order only.The OFFSET and FETCH FIRST clauses can be used only once per query, andcannot be used in unions or view definitions. They cannot be used insubselects, except a subselect in a CREATE TABLE statement or an INSERTstatement.The FETCH FIRST clause cannot be used in the same SELECT statement asSELECT FIRST rowcount.The syntax for each clause is OFFSET n or FETCH FIRST n, where n is apositive integer, a host variable, or a procedure parameter or local variable.Features Introduced in Ingres 9.2 149
