Appendix F: Features Introduced inIngres 2.6This section contains the following topics: User-Visible Language Enhancements (see page 193) Increased Maximum Size of Character Data Types (see page 194)User-Visible DBA Enhancements (see page 194) Internal Performance Enhancements (see page 198)Locking System Performance Improvements (see page 199) Logging System Performance Improvements (see page 200) Buffer Manager Performance Improvements (see page 200) Operating System Integration (see page 200) Ingres ICE Enhancements (see page 201) ODBC Enhancements (see page 201) JDBC Enhancements (see page 202) Support for Unicode (see page 203) New Character Sets to Support Euro Currency Symbol (see page 204) User-Visible Language EnhancementsEnhancements have been made to the internal performance that concern rowproducing procedures.Row Producing ProceduresThis enhancement to the Ingres database procedure language addresses theability of Ingres to read and return to the caller multiple rows from a selectstatement. With server-executed database procedures, the program logic of the procedureis executed entirely in the server address space. Multiple SQL DML requestsare executed in a single invocation of the procedure, with only one interactionwith the client application. The ability to process and return multiple “rows” ofsome composite data types with a single call to a server-resident databaseprocedure adds to the potential for improved performance of an application. In a typical computing environment with applications executing on a variety ofcomputers throughout a network, this approach can significantly reduce thefootprint of the client application and the traffic across the network.Features Introduced in Ingres 2.6 193
