photographed by the video camera sensor. Since the image that isprojected onto the ground glass has the depth-of-field characteristicsof 35mm, this is what is recorded by the video camera. However, there are a couple of downsides to this. First, there is a loss of lightwith all of these systems; it can be a very substantial loss, as much astwo stops — a heavy price to pay in terms of the need for lightingthe scene to a higher stop.Another disadvantage is that the texture of the ground glass will beapparent in the image. To counteract this, the manufacturers use differentmethods. Some have the ground glass rotate, and some haveit vibrate, both of these keep the texture of the glass moving andthus far less visible. This adds an extra battery drain, and some of theunits use a separate battery to power the motion of the ground glass. It is important to remember to switch this on with units that have aseparate power switch for this.Fortunately, more and more HD cameras are now available withmounts, such as PL (the Arriflex mount) or PV (the Panavision mount)that permit easy use of film-style lenses or lenses designed specificallyfor digital video cameras.cinematography286
