And such a conquesthas been achieved by the Beloved of the Gods not onlyhere in his own dominions, but also in the territories bordering on hisdominions, as faraway as at a distance of six hundred yojanas, wherethe Yavana king named Antiyoka is ruling <strong>and</strong> where beyond the kingdomof the said Antiyoka, four other kings named Turamāya, Antikini,Makā <strong>and</strong> Alikasundara are also ruling, <strong>and</strong> towards the southwhere the Choḷas <strong>and</strong> Pāṇḍyans are living, as far as Tāmraparṇi. Likewisehere in the dominions of His Majesty, the Beloved of theGods — in the countries of the Yavanas <strong>and</strong> Kāmbojas of the Nābhakas<strong>and</strong> Nābhapanktis of the Bhoja-paitryānikas <strong>and</strong> of the Andhras <strong>and</strong>Paulindas — everywhere people are conforming to the instructionin <strong>Dharma</strong> imparted by the Beloved of the Gods.Even where the envoys of the Beloved of the Gods have not penetrated,there too men have heard of the practices of <strong>Dharma</strong> <strong>and</strong>the ordinances issued <strong>and</strong> the instruction in <strong>Dharma</strong> impartedby the Beloved of the Gods, <strong>and</strong> are conforming to <strong>Dharma</strong> <strong>and</strong>will continue to conform to it. As the appointment of <strong>Dharma</strong>-Mahāmātras took place thirteen years after coronation, bothRE V <strong>and</strong> RE XIII are to be dated at least several years afterthat, because they report substantial progress made by thisnew service. 38RE XIII is of very great significance from the point of viewof chronology. It refers to five Greek kings who were Aśoka’scontemporaries. They have been identified <strong>and</strong> dated with afair degree of accuracy as follows:73
