Metro – Eco-friendly signage solution in BeijingMetro is known throughout the world for its new andunique cash & carry system. The company is representedin 31 countries and employs around 280,000 peopleworldwide. In 1995 Metro founded Metro Jinjiang Cash& Carry Co. Ltd., a strategic alliance with the renownedChinese Jinjiang Group, so it could enter the Chinesemarket.In the first nine years Metro opened 30 supermarketsthroughout China. Finally, in 2006 the first cash & carryflagship store was opened in Wanquanhe, Beijing. Tocelebrate the official opening Metro Cash & Carry signeda contract with the World Association of Chinese Cuisineand initiated the “China Chef Training Programme”to promote Chinese cuisine during the 2008 OlympicGames in Beijing.The building – and in particular the backlit company logo– has the task of communicating the brand image ofMetro Cash & Carry clearly and effectively to customers.The signage was designed by DEFI, the local partnerof <strong>Tridonic</strong>. On this flagship store the famous “METRO”name appears in impressive three-metre-high letters.To underline the importance of the Chinese marketfor the Metro group, the Chinese characters for MetroCash & Carry also appear on their own sign.Instead of the usual PMMA cover, DEFI used a 3Mfoil for both signs. This technology had to be usedbecause of the size of the signage and the complexityof the Chinese characters.
