COMBOX is a mobile phone answering
service. Depending on which version
is used, it can store voice messages and
faxes and can be activated in a variety
of ways, e.g. call diversion to COMBOX if
the phone is switched off or if a mobile
is switched on but not answered.
PWLAN (Public Wireless Local Area
Network) provides fast, wireless Internet
access at busy locations (hotspots) such
as conference centers and airports. All
that is required is a laptop or Pocket PC,
a WLAN card and a Swisscom Mobile access.
Transmission rates of up to 2 Mbit/s
are possible. With a separate, industrystandard
WLAN card, the laptop does not
have to be connected to a mobile
phone.

Ongoing optimization of existing products
Swisscom Mobile has often optimized existing products based on feedback
from customers. For example, a new platform for prepaid products
launched at the end of June 2002 simplified the use of NATEL ®
easy abroad. Since August NATEL ® customers have been able to pay for
goods purchased from vending machines by mobile phone; the cost is
debited from their credit balance or charged to their mobile phone
bill. In November attractive new functions were added to COMBOX ® ,
and customer’s itemized statements became more detailed and easier
for the customer to understand. As a result of cooperation between
Swisscom Mobile and Postfinance, since December 2002 NATEL ® easy
users have been able to reload their prepaid cards at any post office
machine (Postomat).
Mobile solutions for business customers
The year 2002 saw the rollout of attractive new mobile services for
business customers, with GPRS marking a key milestone. Swisscom
Mobile’s decision to enter the PWLAN business also attracted keen
interest. At Orbit/COMDEX 2002 in Basle, members of the public
were able to try out Public Wireless LAN for the first time; to this end,
Swisscom Mobile equipped the entire exhibition complex with the
necessary infrastructure. Since December the service has been commercially
available at over 100 hotspots, providing business customers
equipped with a WLAN-enabled laptop or Pocket PC with high-speed
wireless access to their corporate network. The number of hotspots is
to be increased to around 300 by the end of 2003.
Applications of particular benefit to business customers are Personal
Information Management (PIM) solutions which allow users to synchronize
e-mails, calendar and contact data via a handheld device.
Since 2000, the “Mobile Solutions” unit has been developing solutions
geared specifically to the needs of business customers.
