Taken together, all of the new steps have made workers’ lives
much easier. “Operator fatigue has been considerably reduced
here,” Deva says. “As a result, the number of days
workers miss has been reduced, and employee satisfaction is
much higher than before.” The stability of the processes has
yielded further product-quality gains as well: discards and reworks
have been significantly reduced.
The automation of the plant has also been welcomed by the
ACMA (Automotive Component Manufacturer Association).
The association works with a group of Indian manufacturers to
upgrade their facilities and work culture, and to attune themselves
to the requirements of the global marketplace. The
plant has gone through a four-year program with ACMA and is
in the initial stage of an Engineering Cluster Program, an initiative
designed to help participants reach world-class manufacturing
standards.
