THE NORTHERN MOLUCCAS. 237Tlie Xorthern Moluccas, where tlic iiolitical ascendency is centred in tlie twovolcanic islets of Tidor and Ternatc, are distinguished, even more than the southerngroup, by their i^eculiarly specialised local forms. Thus Morotai possesses characteristicbirds unknown in Ilalmahera, from which it is separated only by an islandsluddcdstrait twenty-four miles wide. The fauna, both of Morotai in the extremenorth and of Damar in the extreme south, is much more allied to that of the remotePapuasia than the JMoluccas. Specially remarkable is the fauna of Batjan, inFig. 101.—Ejipihes of Teen'ate issn Tidoe.Scale 1 : 20,0:0,000.^'taslj oFGreenwtcb
