Waste Avoidance and Re-usea) Strategic ObjectiveTo develop and implement more sophisticated measures for waste avoidance and re-use for<strong>Liverpool</strong>’s community, supported by targeted education and promotion measures.b) Current PracticesAs part of <strong>Council</strong>’s website, separate dedicated sections on avoidance and re-use have beendeveloped, with each section providing suggestions for residents <strong>to</strong> adopt avoidance / re-usepractices.A separate section is also included on <strong>the</strong> website for Composting and Worm farming, butcontent is under development. <strong>Council</strong> has recently developed a Worm Farm andComposting Plan. Under <strong>the</strong> plan, <strong>Council</strong> has approved <strong>the</strong> provision of a $15 rebate <strong>to</strong><strong>Liverpool</strong> residents that provide proof of purchase of a compost bins or worm farm.<strong>Council</strong> also promotes avoidance through providing promotional calico bags at events.Social research conducted by <strong>Liverpool</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> has indicated that over 60% of residentsdidn’t currently make purchasing decisions on <strong>the</strong> basis of recycled content or ability <strong>to</strong>recycle packaging of product.c) Information SourcesDEC (2004), Producing and consuming efficiently <strong>to</strong> conserve our resources, February 2004“Easy Guide” brochures for a range of waste avoidance, re-use and recycling activities havebeen prepared by DEC including guides for: Composting, Mulching, Natural Cleaning, WormFarming, and Recycling. DEC encourages organisations <strong>to</strong> reprint <strong>the</strong>se brochures with <strong>the</strong>irown logo.
