Preparing a Fire Escape PlanEven with the most advanced firealarm system, adequate protectionrequires an escape plan.To prepare your plan, draw floorplans of your building. (Space isprovided on the next page.) Showtwo exits - a front or back doorand a window from each room.(Make sure the window works.You may need a special fireescapeladder if the window ishigh up.) Write down your outsidemeeting place.Family Rehearsal.Rehearse each of the followingactivities:FIRE PROTECTION1 Everyone in his room with the doorsclosed.2 One person sounds the alarm.3 Each person tests his door.4 Pretend the door is hot and use thealternate escape exit.5 Everyone meets outdoorsat the assigned spot.Important! - Read Carefully1 Discuss these escape procedureswith all those who use the building:In a residence, sleep with thebedroom door closed. A closed doorwill hold back deadly smoke whileyou escape.2 When the fire alarm signals, escapequickly. Do not stop to pack.3 Test the door. If it is hot, use youralternate route through the window.If the door is cool, brace yourshoulder against it and open itcautiously. Be ready to slam thedoor if smoke or heat rushes in.Crawl through smoke, holding yourbreath.
