功 成 身 退轉眼 間 , 我 出 任 世 界 自 然 基 金 會 香 港 分 會 主 席 已 有 八 年 。 任 期 剛告 一 段 落 , 我 亦 趁 此 機 會 , 回 顧 過 去 數 年 的 工 作 , 發 現 無 論 是機 構 本 身 , 還 是 保 育 這 個 界 別 , 都 出 現 了 不 少 重 大 變 化 。初 上 任 時 , 氣 候 變 化 只 是 專 家 的 討 論 議 題 , 科 學 家 對 全 球 暖 化 及 其 人 為因 素 , 多 抱 懷 疑 態 度 。 然 而 , 時 至 今 日 , 這 個 概 念 已 得 到 公 眾 廣 泛 認 識 ,科 學 家 亦 就 問 題 達 成 共 識 。公 眾 不 但 認 識 多 了 氣 候 變 化 , 亦 日 漸 加 深 了 解 各 類 環 境 問 題 : 漁 業 資 源急 劇 減 少 、 天 然 生 態 環 境 流 失 、 物 種 迅 速 滅 絕 、 生 物 多 樣 性 下 降 、 污 染 、人 口 增 加 令 地 球 資 源 遭 過 度 開 採 。傳 媒 廣 泛 報 導 環 保 議 題 , 政 客 公 開 指 出 問 題 的 嚴 重 性 , 在 在 反 映 公 眾 對環 境 的 關 注 , 這 些 報 導 及 言 論 , 亦 有 助 普 羅 大 眾 掌 握 最 新 資 訊 。的 確 , 公 眾 意 識 提 高 , 更 多 人 關 注 環 境 , 絕 對 是 我 們 所 樂 見 的 。 不 過 , 要 解決 環 保 問 題 , 不 能 只 有 空 談 , 必 須 配 合 各 方 的 行 動 : 個 人 須 改 善 生 活 習 慣 , 更 謹慎 地 作 出 消 費 選 擇 ; 各 國 領 袖 及 政 客 須 果 斷 地 作 出 影 響 深 遠 的 決 策 。 大 家 可 能有 朝 一 日 都 會 這 樣 做 , 但 究 竟 要 等 到 何 時 ? 那 一 天 來 臨 前 , 環 境 會 受 到 怎 樣 的破 壞 ? 或 者 , 人 類 要 經 歷 一 、 兩 次 的 大 災 難 , 才 會 醒 覺 過 來 。 這 就 是 人 性 。身 處 這 個 世 代 , 每 個 人 都 須 採 取 行 動 , 給 予 前 線 保 育 人 士 支 持 。 世 界 自 然基 金 會 的 工 作 人 員 滿 有 熱 誠 、 能 力 , 且 積 極 面 對 問 題 , 為 保 育 盡 心 盡 力 , 帶 來顯 著 的 保 育 成 果 , 絕 對 值 得 信 賴 。 環 境 問 題 日 趨 嚴 重 , 我 們 須 抓 緊 時 間 , 向 各界 游 說 、 倡 議 , 推 行 實 地 保 育 工 作 。 無 論 是 保 護 米 埔 的 泥 灘 , 還 是 向 政 府 高官 進 行 游 說 , 都 是 本 會 重 視 的 工 作 範 疇 。擔 任 世 界 自 然 基 金 會 主 席 這 段 日 子 , 充 滿 著 不 少 難 忘 的 經 歷 : 在 米 埔 渡過 的 奇 妙 晚 上 、 海 下 灣 海 洋 生 物 中 心 的 落 成 和 開 幕 、 在 香 港 觀 鳥 大 賽 中 親 歷香 港 壯 麗 的 野 外 環 境 和 觀 賞 豐 富 鳥 類 品 種 、 成 功 保 護 大 小 鴉 洲 、 推 行 「 拯 救海 洋 大 行 動 」 保 護 本 港 漁 業 資 源 和 海 洋 環 境 、 與 世 界 各 地 的 前 線 保 育 人 士 在世 界 自 然 基 金 會 的 年 度 會 議 上 會 面 及 互 相 學 習 等 等 。 不 過 , 最 深 刻 的 , 始 終是 與 一 眾 堅 毅 不 屈 、 才 幹 之 士 朝 同 一 目 標 努 力 , 保 護 地 球 。我 希 望 藉 此 機 會 答 謝 各 位 的 支 持 , 並 懇 請 大 家 繼 續 支 持 世 界 自 然 基 金 會及 新 一 屆 主 席 楊 子 信 , 一 同 迎 接 充 滿 挑 戰 的 未 來 。 沒 有 你 們 的 支 持 , 我 們絕 不 能 進 行 優 質 的 保 育 和 教 育 項 目 !A fond look backMy term as Chairman of WWF Hong Kong has come to an end and itis time to reflect on eight years which saw dramatic changes in WWFand in the world of conservation.When I began my term, climate change was an issue known only tospecialists. The scientific community as a whole was skeptical about globalwarming and its man-made causes. Today, there is high public awareness of theissue, as well as consensus in the scientific community.Apart from climate change, there is also growing public awareness of rapiddeterioration in many other areas; such as collapsing fisheries, disappearance ofwild habitat, an unprecedented rate of species extinction and loss of biodiversity,pollution, and general overexploitation of our increasingly crowded planet.Reflecting and feeding this public awareness is the significantly higher profileof environmental issues in the media, and in the pronouncements of politicians.So: much higher awareness all round, and much talk. That is good progress.But action must follow. Action on the part of individuals in the lifestyle andconsumer choices that they make. Action on the part of leaders and politiciansto make bold and far-reaching decisions. All this will come. The questionis, how soon? What damage will be done in the meantime? We may need acatastrophe or two to encourage us to move along – such is human nature.In times like these, it is important for each of us to take action, and to supportthose who are leading the charge. WWF consists of people who have dedicatedtheir lives to conservation – committed, capable and in many cases, brave. Wecarry enormous credibility and we get results. And there has never been a morepressing time for our lobbying, advocacy and in-field conservation work. Fromthe mudflats of Mai Po to the highest levels of government – we are there.Highlights of my years as Chairman include: magical evenings spent atMai Po; completing and opening the Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre; taking partin the Big Bird Race and experiencing Hong Kong’s spectacular wildernessareas and rich bird life; winning the battle to preserve the Soko Islands;fighting to preserve our fisheries and marine environment through the SaveOur Seas campaign; and attendingWWF Annual Conferences – meetingand learning from conservationistsworking at the front line all around theworld. But most of all, working with abunch of determined, dedicated andcapable people in a common cause.It only remains for me to thank youfor your support, and to ask that youcontinue that support for WWF and for mysuccessor, Trevor Yang, who must now steerthe organisation through the challengingyears ahead.
