They set of into the woods with futureson-in-law Nathan trudging along. A wild boar seems to be the main suspectfor the carnage, but theres something far more dangerous afoot. The familyalso owns a chemical factory and a leak in a tank with an experimental type offertilizer has infected the surrounding wildlife. The pollution has started amutation in the local population of boars, who aggressively attack anything thatbreathes, including themselves. The family members start bickering with eachother, poor Nathan is stuck in between and the boars have tasted blood.Prey is another fine addition to the subgenre of wildlife gone mad. Illustriousexamples like Razorback, Black Sheep and Tremors show what fun you canhave with this when its done right. And with Prey, young debuting directorAntoine Bloissier has done the right thing indeed ! This is one very stylishly filmed horror trip. The foamingbeasties steal the show, but the ones who tear each other apart the most are those animals walking on twolegs. So it gives you lots of pleasure to see how these not very sympathetic characters end us mangled andmutilated in boar stomachs.SIREN (Andrew Hull/UK)An Andrew Hull filmScreenplay: Geoffrey Gunn & Andrew HullCast: Eoin Macken, Anna Skellern, Tereza Srbova, Anthony JabreRunning time: 80 min.Escaping the city for a weekend away, company man Ken and his girlfriend Rachelmeet up with an old friend, the exotic and worldly Marco. Shot inTunisia, this horror flick is a terrifying tale about lust and revenge. It’s a familiar topicfor director Andrew Hull, who has a solid background as art director on films such asP2, Romero’s Bruiser and Absolon. For his first long feature, our fellow Hull musthave had some very pleasant moments with the female cast: Anna Skellern (TheDescent: part two, and the upcoming W.E. directed by Madonna) and Tereza Srbova (Inkheart andCronenberg’s Eastern Promises) are as cute as they are dangerous.44
TETSUO : THE BULLET MAN (Shinya Tsukamoto/Japan)A Shinya Tsukamoto filmScreenplay: Shinya Tsukamoto & Hisakatsu KurokiCast: Eric Bossick, Akiko Monou, Yuko Nakamura, Stephen Sarrazin, Tiger Charlie Gerhardt, Prakhar Jain, Shinya Tsukamoto, MichaelDuncan, Alan Koji, Sou Fujita, Markus Wambsganss, Hajime Izuki, Dwayne Lawler, Aldo La Riviere, Yutaka Mishima, GettoRunning time: 71 min.Office worker Anthony, son of an American father and a Japanese mother, lives inTokyo with his wife Yuriko and their little son Tom. Walking home, Tom is killed in a hit and runbefore Anthony’s eyes. Losing their boy pushes Yuriko over the edge and triggersviolent emotions in Anthony, whose body begins to transform. Little by little, his cellsturn to iron. When the driver who killed Tom reappears and Anthony learns the truthabout his father’s past experiments on human guinea pigs and about his mother’sdeath, Anthony mutates into a mass of metal – a human weapon fuelled by anuncontrollable rage. The BIFFF was the first festival in the world to screen Tetsuo (1989); which has sincebecome the cult gem we all know. So it would have been awkward to end this twentyyearadventure without showing the last episode of Tsukamoto’s trilogy. And our chap hasn’t lost an ounce ofhis talent: edgy editing, mystical inserts, sexualisation of the mechanical – reminiscent in some ways ofCronenberg’s Crash (or is it the opposite?) –, industrial themes for the score (thanks to Chu Ishikawa) andTrent “Nine Inch Nails” Reznor for the soundtrack.45
