SprocketsGeneral SpecificationsThe standard sprockets used with Rexnord chains, both physical and dimensional, are based on sound engineering principles. They reflect the practical experiencegained from applying drives over the last century.Material and hardnessSprocket materials and tooth hardness along with accurate machining, are asimportant to drive life as proper chain selection or adequate lubrication. Materialand hardness have a strong influence on the rate of tooth wear and, therefore, themaintenance of optimum chain and sprocket interaction. The severity and frequency of tooth loading, environment, and similar operatingconditions form the basis for material selection. For example, the small sprocket isusually made of higher carbon, more wear-resistant steel because its teeth contactthe chain more often than those on the large sprocket. The frequency of contact isin direct proportion to the speeds of the driving and driven shafts. With these andother operating conditions in mind, the following standards have been established.Recommended SprocketMaterials are indicated in the table below. Material and tooth hardnessrecommendations are based on chain speed, number of teeth, and operatingconditions. When drives are designed for short-term operation, it may be desirableto specify a lower hardness than indicated in the table.Chain NumberRecommended material and hardnessspeed ofFPM teeth Normal operating conditions s Severe operating conditions n25 or less Medium carbon steel with an approximate Medium carbon steel with teeth hardened to 35Chardness of 170 BrinellRockwell minimumUp to 600 Medium carbon steel with an approximate Medium carbon steel with teeth hardened to 35C26 or more hardness of 170 Brinell; or cast iron with a Rockwell minimum; or Alloy cast ironminimum hardness of 183 Brinell25 or less Medium carbon steel with teeth hardened Medium carbon steel with teeth hardened to 35Cto 35C Rockwell minimumRockwell minimumOver 600 Medium carbon steel with an approximate Medium carbon steel with teeth hardened to 35C26 or more hardness of 170 Brinell; or cast iron with a Rockwell minimum; or Alloy cast ironminimum hardness of 183 Brinells Operating conditions are considered normal when drives are enclosed andadequately lubricated, or when open drives operated in a clean atmospherewith ample lubrication.11n Operating conditions are considered severe when drives are subject to frequentheavy overloads, shock or pulsating loads, inadequate lubrication, or whenopen running drives operate in an abrasive or corrosive atmosphere.GG-1
