1867 TO 1901 113first was known as North Toronto and the second as EastToronto. Concurrently a branch was opened near the cornerof Spadina Avenue and College Street, and was called North-West Toronto. Later on, as the city grew, these names werefound to be misleading. Succeeding years witnessed theestablishment of new municipalities, bearing the names NorthToronto and East Toronto, miles beyond the branchesbearing their names. Accordingly it became necessary todiscontinue district names and to substitute the use of streetnames. The next year, 1888, no branches were opened, butalmost every succeeding year has seen the list of city branchesincreased. The Yonge and College branch was opened inOctober, 1889, Queen and Bathurst, and Parliament Street in1890, Market in 1892, and Toronto Junction (now WestToronto) 1 in 1893. Early in 1892 a similar experiment wasmade in Montreal, two city branches being opened there, one in the neighbourhood of Chaboillez Square and the otheron St. Lawrence [Main] Street, but the experiment did notprove as successful as it did in Toronto, and both brancheswere closed a few years later. Very few other branches wereopened during this period: Sault Ste. Marie and Waterlooin 1889, Walkerville in 1890 and Ailsa Craig in 1892, completedthe list.In 1890 the directorate again underwent importantchanges. Mr. Henry W. Darling, who had held the office ofpresident for three years, retired, and subsequently took uphis residence in the United States. Mr. George A. Cox, whowas later to become a Senator, stepped up from the vicepresidencyto succeed him. He had from the outset of hiselection to the Board been a vital and progressive factor inthe bank's policies, and was recognized as a financier ofthe highest acumen and enterprise. The late Colonel John I.Davidson succeeded him in the vice-presidency. Anothervacancy had been created in the directorate during the yearToronto Junction was a separate municipality in 1893, but was annexed to thecity of Toronto in 1909.
