508 HISTORY OF THE BANKvery much larger and more <strong>com</strong>modious premises on CharlotteStreet, which were used for the storage of books, stationeryand other supplies, and for the work of packing and shippingthem to the branches. Here the department remained untilOctober, 1916, when it removed to its present quarters in thepremises adjoining the main head office building of the bank.Some idea of the demands made upon the departmentto meet the requirements of the bank and its branches will begained from the following statistics. During 1918 about1800 packing cases and 600 cardboard cartons were required tohold the books and stationery shipped to the branches.staffof twenty-two men was needed to handle the work ofthe department, twelve being employed in the printingdepartment. In the latter, six printing presses were continuouslyat work, with an average total of 180,000 impressionsper week. The stock of books, forms and sundry items ofstationery kept on hand at allAtimes, was valued at approximately$125,000, and the department occupied altogetherabout 10,000 square feet of floor space.
