A pavement of flag-stonesstretches across the lower part of the note, and at the right-handend two Herculean youths stand surrounded by the symbols ofscience and industry. The youth in the foreground carries aheavy pulley slung over his left shoulder and another in hisright hand. The open central space is occupied by the nameof the bank and the necessary wording, with the usual Majortint. The denomination, 50, in large black Arabic numerals,appears at each end of this tint, as well as in the upper cornersof the note.The face of the $100 note 1 is symbolical of the difficultiesover<strong>com</strong>e by the pioneer in the uninhabited parts of the earthin the pursuit of fame and wealth. The most prominent figureis that of the sturdy pioneer and explorer at the extremeright of the note. The difficulties that lie before him aresymbolized in the borders of the note by rocky wastes, snowcappedmountains and pathless forests. Beyond these and inthe foreground of the note, somewhat to the left of the centre,is a group of three goddesses, one of whom holds before herthe winged figure of Victory and another the cornucopia, orhorn of plenty. The artist's palette on the knee of the first ofthese two goddesses, the chemical retort in the hands of thethird, the brawny figure at the left-hand end grasping thetools of manufacturing industry, and Mercury, the god of<strong>com</strong>merce, in the rear, all symbolize the means by which thepioneer may over<strong>com</strong>e the difficulties which face him and winthe fame and plenty offered to him. In the centre of the upperborder appears the Union Jack in an oval frame, and at thefour corners the Arabic numerals showing the denomination,the lower two on low pilasters surmounted by globes, emblematicof architectural design.The backs of all the notes of the series 2 consist of a centralgroup of Mercury and Ceres holding the British crown over theseal of the bank, the whole included in a frame of immortelles'See plate 82, facing page 562.2See plate 78, facing page 542.
