THE BANK DURING THE WAR 375LL.D., D.C.L., has been able, since 24th July, 1868,to render to the bank continuous and invaluable service.The directors extend to him hearty congratulations, andexpress their hope that he may be able, for many years,to preside as president and give to the bank the benefitof his long and unequalled experience in all mattersaffecting itsinterests."Sir Edmund entered the service on 24th July,1868, at the age of twenty years, as a junior clerk, buteven at that early age with an experience of seven yearsin the office of his uncle, a private banker in Hamilton,Ontario. His progress was rapid and continuous, andstep by step his positions in the bank gave him a variedand <strong>com</strong>prehensive experience of banking in all aspects.While in the management of the New York branch, hewas appointed general manager in the year 1886, whichposition he held until 1907 when he was appointedpresident." Sir Edmund's services to the bank cannot beover-estimated. His great executive abilities and wideknowledge of business and financial affairs have beenmade use of on many occasions by Governments andpublic bodies in Canada and in the United States ofAmerica."During his long business life he has been active inmany ways in promoting the interests of the public,especially in connection with education, art, music,museums and early Canadian history, but at all timesthe interests of The Canadian Bank ofCommerce werefirst, and he gave to it the benefit of the knowledge,experience and high standing which he acquired in thesevarious ways."The anniversary was marked also by a banquet held onthe evening of July 24, at the King Edward Hotel, Toronto,at which many prominent citizens and a number of membersof the staff were guests.
