THE ARCHIVES DEPARTMENT 505heavy paper, curiously enough, making a lighter bale, as it isnot so easily compressed. Before the bale is released from thepress, its sides are protected by old book covers and it is wiredtogether. When the pressure is released, the expansion of thepaper tightens the wires and keeps the bales in good conditionfor shipment. The paper is then disposed of to dealers in suchmaterial. When the archives building was first opened in 1913 it wasthought that ample space had been provided for the requirementsof many years, but so rapid has been the growth of thebank that it is already overcrowded, and an extension isneeded. 1 In 1915 a building along similar lines was erectedin Vancouver for the requirements of branches on the PacificCoast. 2 When the building in Winnipeg, already mentioned, has been erected, it is hoped that the equipment thus providedwill be adequate for a number of years. On account of the costof transportation it is not practicable, even if it were desirable,to collect allthe bank's records in one place.lThis extension has now been completed; it consists of eight floors, each 85 feetby 50 feet, practically all of which is available for storage purposes. The total floorspace is now about 46,000 square feet, as against 16,000 square feet in the originalbuilding.'See plate 70, facing page 498.
