issues for GRT-051. These delays impact to somedegree the Project Plan implementation schedule butthere is scope in the medium-long term to recoverthese delays.Cryoplant and Fuel Cycle SystemsCryoplantIn 2010, F4E focussed on preparing the “LN 2andAuxiliary Systems of the Cryoplant” call for tender. The activities consisted of:Fig. 11: View of DTP2 control room (courtesy of TEKES-VTT-IHA)• Divertor RH: completion of the first phase ofthe Divertor Remote Handling design and testactivities at the DTP2 facility (GRT-001), and startup of a new Grant (GRT-143). The first remotehandling test sequences on divertor cassettemock-ups have been successfully carried outand the water-hydraulic manipulator arm wasintegrated on board the cassette mover (CMM).On the design, new conceptual design activitieswere started (see Figs. 10 and 11).• Transfer Cask System (aka CPRHS Cask andPlug Remote Handling System): first studies oncask trajectories, virtual reality, test facility andpreparation of a second stage of activities undera grant (GRT-276); start of design activities on theTransfer Cask (OPE-017-03), start of studies onvariants/alternatives to the CPRHS, preparationof the Conceptual Design of an Equatorial PortPlug Cask (OPE-017); start of irradiation studieson cask and divertor cassette movers (F4E-2009-EXP-032).• In-Vessel Viewing System where actionsincluded: (a) first design and test activities onthe IVVS probe and of in-vessel mapping studies(GRT 015); (b) layout and mechanical analysis(OPE-07-02) of an IVVS plug; (c) electromagneticanalysis of an IVVS plug (OPE-06-01); (d)neutronic and gamma analysis of an IVVS plug(OPE-144); (e) design study on piezo-actuatorsfor the IVVS probe (OPE-166).• Neutral Beam Remote Handling: review of theexisting NB RH technical documentation andinterfaces (OPE-017-03), and start of conceptualdesign activities (GRT-051) for all NB RHsubsystems, in liaison with the design activitiesof the other systems hosted in the NB cell andserved by NB RH.With respect to the WP 2010, some slippage ofactivities in the IVVS and NB RH areas occurred dueto delayed input data from ITER IO and administrative• Carrying out an extensive market survey of theindustrial capability to optimise the scope ofsupply and set up a procurement strategy;• Provision of assistance to ITER IO in theconceptual design of the cryoplant;• Award of a contract (OPE-017-02-01-01)for assessing compressor technologies andselecting a cost-efficient LN 2plant configuration;• Preparation of two quotation requests forcompressor technology validation (OPE-292) and80 K loop configuration optimisation (OPE-017).In this area the WP 2010 was implemented globally asplanned, with some minor delays that had no impacton the overall schedule. The 2010 achievements arealso in line with the Project Plan.Cryopumps and Cryodistribution LinesDuring 2010 major progress has been achieved in thecompletion of the design (GRT-018). All the designrelated R&D work is now complete and has resultedin:• Experimental determination of the fluidresistances of the cryopanels and thermal shields(well within the ITER IO specifications);• Estimation of the forces needed to guaranteethe vacuum performance of the valve seal in theTorus and Cryostat cryopumps. Experimentalresults are well within the ITER IO specifications;• The determination of the instrumentation needsfor Cryopumps and Cold Valve Boxes.Pre-Production Cryopump (PPC)During 2010 the TIMO-2 facility (Fig. 13) has beenupgraded (GRT-019) to be able to test the PPC andcomplete its design (GRT-018). Some technologicalissues remain open for the design of the pumpswhich will be addressed during PPC manufacturingand testing.ANNUAL REPORT 2010 FUSION FOR ENERGY31
