In particular almost all the maincomponents were procured.Overall WP 2010 has been implemented as foreseenapart from some procurements which were postponeduntil 2011 mainly due to the late finalisation ofspecifications which depend upon the outcome ofR&D activities. In addition, the time required for theoverall establishment of the NBTF impacts in generalon the progress of these activities.DiagnosticsTwo grant agreements (GRT-024 and GRT-156)were awarded for urgent R&D and design activitiesidentified in WP 2010. Six European fusion researchlaboratories are beneficiaries of the grants. Thesegrants cover:Under ongoing grants, significant progress has beenmade on a number of fronts, in particular:• Key aspects of the Magnetics Diagnosticsystem-level design (i.e. addressing thefunctional aspects relative to requirements anddesign basis of the whole diagnostic) have beendeveloped (GRT-047);• Prototypes of the outer vessel discrete andexternal Rogowski coils (Fig. 19), which will bethe first diagnostic components to be suppliedby F4E to ITER, have been manufactured and atesting plan defined (GRT-012);• A conceptual design for the Diagnostics equatorialport plug structures has also been completedto conceptual level (GRT-024), together withassociated engineering analyses, and favourablyevaluated at an ITER IO Conceptual DesignReview.Discussions with ITER IO to conclude a schedulefor a PA covering the European Diagnostics in-kindcontributions did not reach a conclusion in 2010 andsignature is now expected in autumn 2011, aroundnine months later than indicated in the Project Plan.As a result, many of activities originally envisaged forthe WP 2010 have necessarily been transferred to theWP 2011.Fig. 19: First prototypes of magnetic sensors have been produced in 2010. Site, Buildings and Power SuppliesSite and BuildingsIn May 2010, ITER IO and F4E signed the PA onconstruction (PA 6.2.P2.EU.05), for a credit of about350 kIUA, the largest of its kind. The PA deals withF4E management of the construction worksite,the interaction between F4E and ITER IO duringconstruction, handover and follow-up. In July 2010,after the site clearance and the levelling work wascompleted, ITER IO handed over the ITER platform toF4E and authorised F4E to start construction.In 2010, several important contracts were awardedand related activities started:• The contract for the Design and Construction ofthe PF coils buildings contract (OPE-026) startedin January 2010, and by August 2010, after sixmonths of studies, the construction work startedfollowing the granting of the construction permit.By end-2010 the earthworks and related sitepreparation work was close to finalisation;• The Tokamak pit excavation and support structurecontract (OPE-095) provides for excavationof the time-critical buildings, in advance withrespect of the final design date of the complex.The excavation work started in August and at theend of December the final rock profile was beingexecuted following the excavation of around 200000 m 3 of rock using blasting technologies;• The contract for the 493 Anti Seismic Bearingscontract (OPE-065) (bearings able to mitigateseismic effects on the Tokamak building) startedin July. This contract is on the critical path forthe nuclear buildings meaning that delays inthis contract delay the overall schedule forthe buildings. Prototype tests started and theproduction of the first bearings will start in NewYear 2011;• Architectural and Engineering Services contract(OPE-058), covering the preparation of thedetailed design of all the buildings (based on theFinal Functional Requirements), the tenderingsupport, and the work supervision;• After the contract signature in April, the ArchitectEngineer delivered the Preliminary Design of allthe ITER buildings in September which was laterreviewed by the Legal Inspection Services. Thisdesign takes into account the safety requirementsof the Preliminary Safety Report. In parallel, theArchitect Engineer started the Tender Design inorder to be able to launch the call for tenders forthe Tokamak building;Fig. 20: Architectural view of the ITER Building (courtesy of the Engage Consortium)36
