Ion Cyclotron HeatingDevelopment of the detailed design of the IonCyclotron Heating (ICH) antenna started underGRT-026 and included the preparation of the ITERConceptual Design Review (CDR). The mechanicaldesign of the antenna advanced in particular for theremovable vacuum transmission line and solutionsto supply services to antenna systems. The antennaperformance was evaluated under a range ofconditions. The electrical design progressed withgrounding and arc detection studies. The disruptionresponse of two different schemes for grounding ofthe antenna to the blanket was analysed.Fig. 16: Window assembly fabricated as part of the contract (OPE-140)with KIT (Germany)(OPE-140) to prepare for the manufacture and testingof an improved high power window design (Fig. 16).There is a delay in the implementation compared toWP 2010 and the Project Plan due to the re-scheduleby ITER IO of the PA signature and delivery dates forthe launchers.Electron Cyclotron RF Sources and PowerSuppliesIn the frame of the grant agreements and contracts(GRT-08 and GRT-049), progress has been made inthe understanding of the performance limiting factorsof the European gyrotron and design improvements. The gyrotron is being refurbished (OPE-09) for anassessment in 2011 of the 2MW development (Fig.17). A similar configuration was already experimentallyvalidated at KIT and good results were obtained:2.3MW of RF output power, 31% of efficiency withoutdepressed collector, >96% of Gaussian content ofthe output beam. All grant agreements and contracts foreseen in theWP 2010, related to the preparation, upgrading andtesting of the EU gyrotron for ITER, and to the analysisof design issues for ITER (GRT-034 and GRT-0948),have been signed and work has started. One CDR issue concerned the RF window materialand its qualification. During 2010 the work for CHITSresolution led to the decision to change the windowmaterial from Beryllia to Alumina and to modify thequalification requirements, in particular, the maximumthermal load on the Faraday Screen (from 2-5 MW/m 2 ). However, the detailed load specifications forthe Faraday Screen, required to start the design ofthis component under GRT-026 were not providedon time by ITER IO. As a consequence, the F4Eactivity covered by the ITAs to qualify the windowand Faraday Screen design was postponed to 2011and is now on the critical path for the PA signaturemilestone. The remainder of the activities are in linewith the Project Plan.Neutral Beam HeatingF4E is in charge of the in-kind contributions relatedto six Neutral Beam (NB) Procurement Packages, which include beam sources, beam line components, confinement and shielding, coils, power suppliesand assembly. The seventh major PA includes theEuropean procurements for the establishment of theNeutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) in Padua, Italy. In 2010 F4E continued to provide support to ITERIO to prepare the NB technical specifications at therequired level of detail. This support included mostof the design and R&D activities related to the NBsystem and the design and the establishment of theNBTF. In particular:• Conclusion of the PA with ITER IO for theEuropean procurements associated with a fullscale NBTF;• Completion of the final design review of the BeamSource and Vacuum Vessel, the most crucialcomponents of SPIDER - one of the two mainNBTF test-beds (Fig. 18);Fig. 17: Refurbished gyrotron prototype for ITER (from left to right): viewof the coaxial gun (improved design), view of the beam tunnel internalstructure designed to suppress parasitic oscillations, view of the upperpart of the new high efficiency launcher.• Award of the first procurement contract for thepower supplies of the SPIDER ion source (OPE-046) and the launching of the calls for tender for34
