Irregular in outline, it is broken upinto a number of semi-detached knolls, possibly by wind action. One ofthese contains, in addition to a number of quite modern grave-mounds,a network of stone-lined enclosures varying in size but with the generalappearance of a group of cists with the covers removed. The stones, seton edge, project a few inches above the turf.The site generally revealed numerous human bones (presumably fromthe broken-down cists) in addition to articles of stone, deer antler,wrought bone and pottery, as well as kitchen-midden and animalremains. 1915.This mound was not located anywhere on the west side of Baleshare:the authority may be referring to Sloc Sabhaidh (NF76SE 19). 1965.There is currently no sign of a mound at this location or any other siteof archaeological interest.NF76SE 8001 NMRS NF 78 61 Non-designated MARITIME; SHIP Unknown Unknown Unknown 17 November 1877, JAMES A. This vessel strandedon Balshave (?Baleshare) Island. There was nothing to see at thislocation.1stmillenniumBC-5th CADEroding Survey A sandhill site locally known as Sloc Sabhaidh, has revealed a series ofkitchen-middens containing ashes, shells etc. Other finds includehammer-stones, bone pins, potsherds and a thin bronze ring ornamentedwith twisted wire, probably Viking, not later than AD.900-1000.Within the base of the southern sandhill were found flint flakes,potsherds and charred bones, probably indicating a burnt burial, while,on a small knoll on the N of the site, cut-marked whale bones and acrude saddle quern were found. 1911.Sloc Sabhaidh is at c. NF 7823 6085. Shells, bones and ash can be seenin the many rabbit holes in the mound. Only a slight trace of a moundcould be seen at this location. A possible hearth was identified at NF78201 60824. A thick midden deposit was identified within the sandsection at NF 78210 60820, containing possible stone structure andnumerous sherds of Iron Age pottery as well as slag, shell and animalbone.Unknown Eroding Survey Some upright stones and large angular stones were identified on theshingle beach at this location. They are currently partly buried beneaththe shingle. Some buried soil was visible at this location which yieldedsome midden material including shell and animal bone.Unknown Unknown Unknown A boat shaped feature is clearly visible on APs dating from 1946 andprogressively becomes submerged on later editions. No sign of thisshipwreck could be seen from the beach.UISN/1051/0239CFA
