MAP 8: RUBHA MHÀNAIS TO HANGLAMHinterland Geology and Coastal Geomorphology:Rocky headlands and shoal formations continue southwards towards the Aird anRùnair peninsula. A small neck of land connects it to the main shore and it is flankedby two crescent-shaped beaches. The headland itself is highly indented with lowlyingrock outcrops and rocky shoals. Towards the interior, the land is predominantlymachair land that has been compartmentalised into a series of field systems.Freshwater lochs are also present in the area, surrounded by tracts of marshland. Theunderlying geology is Lewisian Gneiss.Erosion Class:This stretch of coastline sees alternating sections of eroding and stable coast. Thestable sections (Cells 27, 29 and 31) are composed of stable areas of exposed rockyplatforms and cliffs. The eroding sections (Cells 28, 30 and 32) encompass sandyembayments at Bàgh Hogha Glan and Tràigh Bhàn, and the larger crescent-shapedbeaches of Tràigh nam Faoghailean and Tràigh Iar, where tidal action on the beachesis causing erosion of both the sand and till. The worst affected beaches are Tràigh Iarand Port Scolpaig, where the dune face has been eroded to sheer cliff with intermittentdeflations along its length.Built Heritage & Archaeology:The majority of the recorded sites are buildings, field boundaries, enclosures and lazybeds relating to the crofting landscape of the 18 th -20 th centuries. A number of newsites relating to this landscape were recorded on the two peninsulas, Gearraidh Galland Aird An Rùnair, including possible shielings, one of which had a piece ofwhalebone incorporated into the structure (Site 399). St Clement’s Chapel, of likely16 th -17 th century date, was recorded. Eroding middens of likely prehistoric date wererecorded in the dune systems of Tràigh nam Faoghailean and Tràigh Iar. Twoparticularly large middens with associated structures of likely later prehistoric datewere recorded on the west side of Tràigh nam Faoghailean, eroding out onto thebeach. A further band of eroding shell midden was recorded on Rubha Port Scolpaig.UISN/1051/083CFA
