MAP 6: TRÀIGH IAR TO CAOLAS BHALAIGHHinterland Geology and Coastal Geomorphology:The Vallay strand and island are a conspicuous landscape element within this area.The island is largely sand-covered and consists of a lower western and higher easternend (30m OD). Sand ridges and coastal dunes dominate this area of land. Tolandward the wide inter-tidal sandflats are bordered by an irregular coastal edgeforming a V-shaped bay. Outcrops of rock form small islets; these are present atEilean Dubh Mòr and further off-shore at Torogaigh, where banks of shingle form amargin around this outcrop. The hinterland is a mixture of marine sand and thin driftdeposits over Lewisian Gneiss. At Geiriscleit (NF 7660 7540) this irregular landformextends out from the main coastal edge.Erosion Class:Erosion has been recorded along the coast at Malacleit, where saltmarsh edges a lowrocky shore. The remainder of this section, Cell 17, is both eroding and stable, withevidence of slow erosion of soils overlying drift deposits and rock.Built Heritage & Archaeology:A considerable quantity of sites have been recorded in this section, in part due to theVallay Strand survey of 1990-1996 and partly due to the crofting township atMalacleit. The majority of the recorded sites are buildings, field boundaries,clearance cairns, enclosures and lazy beds relating to the crofting landscape of the18 th -20 th centuries. An A Listed cottage and a B Listed cottage have been recorded.Other sites include boat noosts, a pier, a mill, culverts and gravel pits. A number ofprehistoric sites have been recorded which have also been excavated, including awheelhouse at Eilean Maleit, which was excavated in the 1900’s and 1990’s, and aburnt mound and a chambered tomb which were excavated in the 1990’s. Thewheelhouse at Garry Iochdrach, excavated in 1912-13, is currently at risk of erosion.UISN/1051/061CFA
