the front free endpaper: “Mr. Edmund Routledge with the compliments <strong>of</strong> Oliver Wendell<br />
Holmes, Boston March First 1881, written with the pen with wh. the Autocrat was written.”<br />
<strong>The</strong> recipient was part <strong>of</strong> the Routledge publishing family, who brought out Holmes’s work<br />
in England, and editor <strong>of</strong> “Every Boy’s Magazine.” His handsome bookplate is on the front<br />
pastedown; two other plates from subsequent owners are also present. A nice inscription and<br />
a meaningful association. $500<br />
