One <strong>of</strong> 500 numbered copies, the entire edition. A superb presentation copy, inscribed by<br />

Stephens to John Drinkwater with a verse quote. Drinkwater’s leather booklabel is affixed to<br />

the pastedown <strong>of</strong> the chemise. Beneath this (and overlapping the discreetly place bookpate <strong>of</strong><br />

a subsequent owner) is a tipped-on autograph letter signed by Stephens to Oliver St. John<br />

Gogarty, written on Drinkwater’s behalf as a letter <strong>of</strong> introduction. A nice association copy<br />

<strong>of</strong> an uncommon item. $500<br />

upper edge <strong>of</strong> rear board, else fine in original acetate wrapper and custom slipcase. One <strong>of</strong><br />

only 25 copies on Japan Vellum. With a tipped-in etching signed by Power O’Malley, and<br />

specially inscribed by Stephens: “Cropped, confined and / c<strong>of</strong>fined in / Cage <strong>of</strong> cowardice -<br />

and sin, / Slave! who freeman / might ‘a ‘bin, James Stephens, Dublin May, 1924,” as issued.<br />

Large 8vo, original printed orange wrappers. Spine very slightly darkened, else fine, bright<br />

and crisp in the original cardboard slipcase, which is broken (as were all <strong>of</strong> them) and<br />

missing a few pieces; slipcase lightly sunned along edges. One <strong>of</strong> 85 numbered copies on<br />

Strathmore permanent all-rag paper, signed by Stevens (there were an additional 20 copies<br />

on Didot handmade paper, hors commerce). A lovely copy <strong>of</strong> Stevens’s rarest book and,<br />

indeed, one <strong>of</strong> the rarest books <strong>of</strong> modern poetry. $15,000<br />
