PART III:Women in the unionsand associationsAcrucial step in the recognition of the role of trade unions inthe promotion of gender equality was acknowledged in thePlatform for Action of the Fourth World Conference on Women(Beijing, 1995), which called on governments and all social actors to:“Recognise collective bargaining as a right and as animportant mechanism for eliminating wage inequality forwomen and to improve working conditions;Promote the election of women trade union officials andensure that trade union officials elected to represent womenare given job protection and physical security in connectionwith the discharge of their functions”.The feminisation of journalism led to an increase of womenmembership in journalists’ unions and associations. According to theIFJ survey on the status of women journalists carried out in 2001,women journalists represented 28.75% of union membership andtheir representation in union decision-making bodies was higher in allregions than the number of women in decision-making in the mediain general. Overall, women represented 17% of members in uniongoverning bodies.The need to increase women membership in journalists’ unionsand associations is crucial to improving the prospects of genderequality in the profession.
