Getting the balance right: gender equality in journalism; 2009 - Fokus

Learn about women rights that exist in legislation, in the mediaand in unions’ policies. If a union or association is a memberof the IFJ, they have agreed to several policy statementsconcerning gender equality that are printed at the end of thisbooklet. Use these to hold your union accountable and judgeits actions against. Organise women in the union: map media houses and collectinformation about current and possible members. Organisevisits to media houses, journalism schools and universities toraise awareness about the union and inquire about issues ofconcern. A regular monitoring of union membership, includingfigures for men and women, will provide useful feedback onthe organising developments. Women will be more inclined toTHE IFJ GENDER COUNCILThe IFJ’s equality campaign is overseen by the IFJ Gender Councilcomposed of women and men activists nominated by IFJ affiliates from allregions in the world (http://www.ifj.org/assets/docs/140/127/30eb48c-5edec7f.doc).The council develops the IFJ’s gender policies, and drives theiradoption and implementation by affiliates providing an essential link tonational unions’ activities. The council is an essential resource of leadingexperts on campaigning for equal rights and provision of trainers for IFJactivities.
