Featurecompliance audits are already done in the areasimpacted by the new procedures, it is relativelysimple to add a new review section to the existingprocedure. However, if your staff is few innumber and typically works more with trendanalysis and measurement reporting, you aremore likely to use those monitoring methods.Other familiar monitoring tools includeaffirmation of training, attestation of complianceby vendors and producers, gaugingknowledge levels of employees and producers,quantifying completion and accuracy rates, andevaluating increases in complaints or hotlinecalls about an impacted area. Some less familiartools which appear to be gaining traction in theethics and compliance community are:··Monitoring and listening to communicationsof employees on social media blogs,Facebook, and Twitter. This should not bedone with punitive mind-set.··Early identification of “hot spot” eventsor statements.··Stakeholder teleconference calls, town hallmeetings, sales meetings.··Employee and consumer focus groups.The end goal of risk managementHaving accepted the challenge of an identifiedrisk, the company’s well-structured programlikely requires vigilance and encouragescontinuous improvement of both companyprocedures and of the monitoring and/orauditing of those procedures. One of theprime objectives of designing such a proactivesystem is to allow the company to identifya growing concern before it becomes anissue—and before consumers are harmed orregulators become concerned.
