The new School of Education
was officially opened by UW
Rector Prof. Dr. Lambert T.
Koch at a ceremony attended
by some 150 guests at the
end of october 2010. Ministerial
Counsellor Dr. Dietmar
Möhler from NRW’s Ministry
of Innovation, Science, Research
and Technology, and
Ulrich Wehrhöfer from the
Ministry of Schools, Education
and Training emphasized
the pioneering role played
by the university in the field
of teacher education: the
UW School of Education had
been founded in response to
a change in the Higher Education
Act that tasked the
universities engaged in the
field of teacher education to
establish autonomous organizational
units or centers
for this purpose. The School
of Education consists of two
divisions that work closely together.
The Joint Degree Program
Committee coordinates
teacher education within
the university’s bachelor’s
and master’s programs and
makes decisions at a crossfaculty
level. The Institute of
Educational Research bundles
teaching and research activities
within the educational
sciences and offers most of
the courses that take place
With more than 4 million people
employed nationwide, the
health sector is continuously
developing and offers excellent
career prospects for
specialist economists and
business administration graduates.
Since winter semester
2010-2011 more than 50
students have enrolled in the
new bachelor’s program in
Health Systems Economics
and Management. Combining
research, teaching and onthe-job
experience, this fills
a market niche within the
health industries.
The Center was formally opened
on November 3, 2010
with an event at the Freudenberg
Campus Lecture Hall
Center. The importance of
the degree programs for the
Bergisch region, where the
health sector already employs
more than 30,000 people,
was emphasized. For Center
CEo Prof. Dr. Rainer Wieland,
“The Center underpins
already existent competencies
within the regional health
economy and raises the research
profile of the University
of Wuppertal in health management
and economics.”
The Bergisch Regional Competence
Center has three divi-
Management and Public
Health, and the university’s
degree programs in health
economics and management.
Founding members of the
Center are the Wuppertal
They are often to be seen
working on high-tech plant,
and always they are working
for people. Whether in heavy
industry or traditional workshops,
in refineries or the
automotive industry, in the
health industries or across
the service sector, they are
there, improving fire protection,
preventing explosions,
estimating risks or planning
production processes and
plant. They are to be found
at almost every point in the
value added chain, from the
extraction of raw materials,
through manufacture and
finishing processes, to recycling
and final disposal. over
the last few decades they
have done much to make our
worlds and workplaces safer,
cleaner, user-friendlier, and
more comfortable. Who are
they? Safety engineers, of
ging social, structural and industrial
framework drove the
rapid expansion of the original
department to its present
scope. This now extends to
13 disciplines ranging from
workplace safety and environmental
protection, through
fire and population protection,
to risk avoidance and quality
control. We are currently turning
our minds to air transportation
safety.
sAFety in reseArCH
The wide interests of the
School of Safety Engineering
are reflected in its research
activities, which focus on
such disparate areas as the
reliability of braking systems
and the avoidance of needlestick
injuries on the one hand,
or the physical and psychological
impact of changing
work conditions and the filtration
of fine dust particles
on the other. our graduates
are much sought after by
companies and public authorities,
as well as, for example,
by insurance organizations,
where their knowledge and
judgment is indispensable in
many complex fields. Wherever
they are employed, UW’s
safety engineers continue to
demonstrate the engineering
competence and professional
independence that comes
from 35 years of specialization
in this field.
programs, so that students
benefit from the latest developments
tested in the field
of practice. With a graduate
employment rate of close
on 100% it is not surprising
that our alumni provide us
with top ratings. And these
are also reflected in the high
demand for places on our degree
programs. The Wuppertal
concept of safety engineering
evidently works. And the
forecast for safety engineers
is very promising in terms of
growth rates and fields of activity.
In future, too, our graduates
can be sure of finding
an interesting and flourishing
market for their skills.
