the beFIT network.
beFIT stands for Bergisch Re-
gional Facility for International
Technology Start-Ups. Its aim
is to establish new technology
and knowledge-based
enterprises in the Bergisch
region’s three major cities
(Remscheid, Solingen and
Wuppertal) and to link them
firmly in the region.

kInstitute of Entrepreneurship
and Innovation Research:
supports the establishment
and (international) growth of
business ideas and spin-offs
from a university background.
kKnowledge Transfer office:
supports international student
and graduate start-ups
for up to five years after graduation.
kWuppertal and Solingen
Business Promotion: helps
with the acquisition of startup
capital and orders, as well
as with finding a suitable location,
and coordinates projects.
kBergisch Regional Development
Agency: links young entrepreneurs
and established
companies with each other.
kWuppertal Technology Center
(W-Tec) and Solingen Center
for Technology Start-Ups:
help young entrepreneurs
acquire (international) orders
and contact networks.

Since July 2010 the
Technical Academy
Wuppertal has been
cooperating with UW in the
University–Industry Continuing
Education Network. A
first highly successful project
was a six-week preparatory
course for 20 students who
already held admission qualifications
for a university of
applied science. The course
aimed to boost these up to
the level required for admission
to UW. After passing examinations
in mathematics,
physics and English, 90% of
participants went on to enroll
for a degree in one of UW’s
engineering faculties.

The success of this pilot
project has led to a surge in
demand. The first course offered
for the present year is
already full, and attempts are
being made to set up a second
parallel course to enable
more young people with
university of applied science
entrance qualifications to
take the further step to a UW
degree.

The Continuing Education
Network seeks to intensify
joint activities in the field of
continuing education and es-
pecially to improve the provision
of innovative courses
tailored to regional business
and education requirements.
In this context the network is
now planning joint in-service
bachelor’s programs majoring
in engineering, as well
as continuing education programs
leading to a University
Certificate.
