After a welcoming address by the Rector, Prof. Dr. Lambert T. UW looks forward to this and has been taking steps for some years to provide excellent conditions for a larger number of students. Construction of a new lecture hall center and other additions to the premises has ensured that students will have sufficient room, and additional places have been created on both restricted entry and nonrestricted degree programs. Further professorships and other teaching posts have been established in many areas so that students throughout the university will have adequate access to both teaching and consultation. kwww.zsb.uni-wuppertal.de k Starting your studies miCroCompUter from WUppertal In distant California Steve Jobs had just brought out the Apple II, and we were coming up to our Abitur, the High School leaving exam. It was 1977, and we soon set about building our first computer. Electrical engineering was not yet an area one could study at university here, so we were left to gather what knowledge we could by dismantling radios, TV sets and tape recorders, and reading whatever manual or textbook from the USA we could get our hands on. our first UW trained electrical engineer came to us in 1986, almost ten years after we had started our company, Wiesemann & Theis. The help available today is far more effective than it was in the 70s, but the tasks are a good deal more complex, too. The people we take on in our R&D department as a rule have an engineering degree behind them. But we have also learned to put together our own knowledge, and we employ non-graduates alongside graduates with great success. Take our microcomputer, for example, which serves in the widest sense as an interface between two standard ports or input-output terminals. In its development we continuously had to assimilate the latest changes in computer technology. We learned, and are still learning, every day. However much life is dicta- ted by deadlines, we at W&T believe that excellence takes time. Mental processes of learning, discovering and inventing are a matter of loving your work and giving yourself to it, and that can only grow with time. Which is why we offer school students a double opportunity: our own DIY club, which is open to all, and UW’s Bergisch Schools Science and Technology Program (BeST), where budding young engineers can concentrate on a task and have the time and facilities to bring it to a conclusion. If you are still looking for such a task, we recommend that you come to School Leavers‘ Day, another event organized by UW, where upper school students can meet experts from the university as well as from the world of business and industry.
