Fascinating projects,
intensive supervision,

the degree program – many

mechanical engineering students
at the University of
Wuppertal this is reality.
PrACtiCAL ProjeCts in-
teGrAted into tHe Pro-
GrAM
In close cooperation with
companies like Igus and
Schunk our students develop
drives for robot arms or build
a formula racing car for UW’s
Green Lion Racing Team.
Projects like these, whether
voluntary or linked to assignments,
enable our students
to apply their knowledge directly
in practice, and prepare
them for the nine week industrial
internship integrated into
the bachelor’s program from
the third semester on.
exCeLLent Conditions
oF study
With the best student-professor
ratio of all mechanical
engineering programs in the
State of North Rhine-Westphalia
(NRW), the University
of Wuppertal attracts an
increasing number of future
engineers. And in order to
maintain these excellent conditions,
six program areas
have appointed new professors
in the past two years
(materials technology, technical
mechanics, technical
vocational didactics, fluid
mechanics, mechatronics,
and engineering design). Research
as well as teaching
has benefited from these new
appointments, for example
in the field of numerical methods
for product develop-
ment, or in the development
of fail-safe systems. In the
automotive sector we have
been working on the optimization
of ventilation in truck
and automobile arm-rests
to prevent heat build-up and
enhance comfort and safety,
as well as on the analysis of
rigidity and tolerance in hood
locking devices.
toP CAreer ProsPeCts
As most master’s, as well
as doctoral, programs run in
close cooperation with industry,
a UW master’s degree
– for instance in computational
mechanical engineering
– with the possibility of going
on to a doctorate afterward, is
a springboard to an outstanding
career.

tWin-traCk Degrees in meChaniCal engineering
You want to start work
straight after school but
at the same time study for a
degree? UW’s twin-track system
could be just the thing
for you. With us you (m/f) can
combine a BSc in mechanical
engineering with your training
as an industrial mechanic or
toolmaker. The apprenticeship
takes four semesters,
the BSc eight.

Twin-track students are high-
ly motivated, because imme-
diate on-the-job application
of the theoretical knowledge
gained at university is an
ideal medium for successful
learning. Study conditions on
the program are also excellent,
with small fast-moving
groups in close cooperation

opportunities. Last but not
least, in the twin-track model
you earn money as an industrial
apprentice while you are

an inflow of specialist workers
trained on the job – a
solution to Germany’s current
HR gap in trained technicians.
Moreover, the link to UW’s
know-how and leading edge
research can bring crucial
knowledge and innovation
transfer, ranging from applied
research projects to joint applications
for research funding.
As the Bergisch regional continuing
and advanced education
center for technical
trades, the Remscheid Metal
and Electrical Industries’ Educational
Center provides the
complete range of basic and
specialist training leading to
the qualified technician’s certificate
for 30 different trades
in the metal-working, electrical
and IT industries of the
region. Further development
into a competence center for
economics and technology
has brought additional courses
and seminars in business
administration, management
and communication. Technical
career advisory projects
for schools, like the Bergisch
Schools Science and Technology
Program, complete the
center’s offer. UW has been
cooperating with the Remscheid
Metal and Electrical
Industries’ Educational Center
on twin-track degree programs
since 2007.
