UW’s sUmmer University – the exCiting Woman’s
WorlD of sCienCe anD engineering You are coming to the
Why shouldn’t you mix
fresh pineapple with
quark? How do organic solar
cells work? Such questions,
with the appropriate answers,
are the concern of UW’s
Summer University for upper
school students, part of a nationwide
drive to interest girls
and young women in science,
mathematics and engineering
at university.
Since its inception in 1998,
more than 2000 students
from regional schools have
participated in the UW offer,
spending five days in mid se-
mester on a stimulating program
that introduces them to
the daily life of science and
engineering undergraduates.
With topical themes like ‘Foul
Air and Climate Change – Can
the Atmosphere be Saved?’
they catch a glimpse of what
UW scientists are doing.
Many subjects are on offer,
from architecture to food
chemistry, mathematics to
biology, chemistry to physics.
Lectures might be anything
from an architect’s thoughts
on ‘Recycling through Acupuncture’
to a mathematician
wondering whether ‘In the
Beginning was Chaos’ is a
stochastic problem.
The Summer University aims
to heighten participants’ confidence
in their own abilities,
and open their eyes to hidden
talents. Experienced undergraduate
tutors supervise and
guide the young women, who
also gain insights into UW’s
central organizational units
on the one hand and the daily
life of professional scientists
and engineers on the other.
The event enjoys active support
from a range of companies
including Ford Germany
(Cologne), Bayer Health Care,
Vorwerk, Coroplast, Delphi
Automotive, Witte Automotive,
and the Technology Center

Upper school students, espe-
cially those immediately pre-
paring for the Abitur (German
high-school graduation certificate),
as well as their parents
and teachers, should write
this date in their calendar:
UW’s School Leavers’ Information
Days take place every
year at the end of January and
beginning of February.
In cooperation with the Cen-
tral Student Advisory and
Counseling Service and the
Careers Service, UW professors
and students introduce
the university’s wide range
of departments and degree
programs, answer questions,
and show you round the university.
Short presentations
and visits to laboratories and
other facilities provide a firsthand
impression of research
and teaching at UW.

Each year the School Leavers’
Information Days begin
with the Bergischer Primanertag
(Regional School Leavers’
Day), held at Elberfeld’s
Vocational-Technical College,
where some 120 professors
join with managers from industry
and commerce to
meet the young people and
answer their questions about
university, practical training
and choice of profession.

UW is also present at the annual
regional education fairs,
for instance at Germany’s biggest
contact forum for highschool
leavers, EINSTIEG Abi
in Cologne and Dortmund.
The two-day event in Cologne
often sees as many as 70 UW
professors, assistants and
student counselors answering
school leavers’ questions
about studying at university.
