Laura ohlendorf is a
collector of what other people
throw out. Whether bought
in the flea market, bid for on
e-bay, or picked up from the
roadside on cellar and garage
clearance days, old pictures
and objects form the inspiration
of her work. From the time
she started university she
has assembled a collection of
family photos of the sort we
all have lying around – generations
of other people’s families,
into whose private lives
she can suddenly submerge.
Fragments preserved in the
moment of their disappearance.
These form the material of
Wuppertal’s Galerie Epikur
regularly hosts an artist-inresidence
program during the
summer months. In 2011, six
UW art students put on an
impressive exhibition there
under the direction of Professor
Katja Pfeiffer.
mes physically, always imaginatively:
rejected bric-à brac,
value-added in a collage.
She paints on old pieces of
linoleum or forgotten tablecloths
– objets trouvés that
in themselves tell stories of
times past. Used materials,
never of great value, always
only the background of other
people’s histories, these
things become significant
only now, in the context of
the images projected on and
into them. A piece of old lino
carries the life that could have
taken place on it, a family story
transformed through dying
matter into the wholly immaterial.
Culture is in the broadest
sense everything
we shape and create ourselves.
It influences our perceptions,
thoughts, values, and
actions, and defines our social
belonging. A university also
has a living culture that is continuously
developing. It is our
desire and aim to shape this
culture so that our students
feel themselves part of UW
society and experience this
as an enrichment throughout
their lives.
The promotion of a genuine
alumni culture at UW seeks
to provide our former students
with structures that link
them to the university long
after graduation. The Alumni
Service functions as a framework
bundling an increasing
number of offers and events
that demonstrate and embody
the growth of UW’s alumni
culture.
Celebrated this year for the
ninth successive time in
Wuppertal’s Historic Civic
Hall, Graduation Day has long
become a firm fixture in the
corporate mind of the university.
The festive farewell to
our graduates, who receive
their degrees in the company
of their parents, relatives and
friends, marks the conclusion
of an important phase
in their lives, and at the same
time, we hope, the beginning
of many further activities cementing
the bond between
professional life and the university.
