Graduates armed with
a bachelor’s degree
are an attractive proposition
on the job market: they have
wide basic knowledge plus
trans-disciplinary competencies.
Many UW graduates decide
nevertheless to proceed
straight to a master’s degree.
A current survey by the Association
for the Promotion
of Science and Humanities
in Germany shows this to be
a nationwide trend followed
by some 70% of BA and BSc
graduates. Motives for such a
decision are above all interest
in the subject and improvement
of career chances.

The industries of the Bergisch
region around Wuppertal are
keenly interested in establishing
contact with students
from the beginning of their
degree programs. As a step
toward ensuring a supply of
well educated young professionals
for their companies,
they have founded the
Bergisch Regional Confederation
of Qualified Employees.
UW’s Career Service has also
set up a range of measures
encouraging contact between
students and regional
enterprises.
These include
• individual career counseling
– person to person advice
on employment opportunities
and perspectives;
• application dossier check –
for those soon graduating;
• ‘Key Qualifications for University
and Career’ – training
sessions providing key
competencies as well as
insights into graduate career
paths and application
procedures;
• company visits organized
jointly with the Wuppertal,
Solingen and Remscheid
Chamber of Industry and
Commerce – most recently
to Wuppertal Municipal
Utilities and Wiesemann &
Theis GmbH;
• experience abroad – recognition
of an internship
abroad of at least three
months’ duration during a
bachelor’s program is possible
within the framework
of the ‘Compact Supplementary
options’ project;
• a job and internship database
containing some 600 job
offers for students, above
all from regional employers;
• an annual Job Congress at
Wuppertal’s Historic Civic
Hall.

If you want to work
on exciting projects
that are important for the
future of our society, get in
touch with AWG Wuppertal
(Wuppertal Waste Services).
AWG is all about household
and industrial waste, recyclable
materials, and environmental
protection. As well
as waste management, this
includes the collection and
transport of garbage and en-
vironmentally friendly processing
and disposal of waste
products of every kind. Much
of this waste material can be
used – without recourse to
primary energy – for generating
electrical and thermal
energy for the local population.
AWG is also concerned
with management systems
and workplace safety (including
explosion protection).
The list of topics is long.
AWG offers internships for
UW students from a wide
range of disciplines – e.g.
safety engineering, environmental
protection – that
open up horizons in many
directions. Part-time work in
appropriate technical areas
can also be a valuable way of
testing your theoretical knowledge
in practice.
As a partner to the university,
AWG supports UW students
with specialist know-how,
not only offering project topics
but also supporting and
guiding students in the completion
of their bachelor’s and
master’s theses or diploma
dissertations.
