The University of Wuppertal
(UW) is a dynamic,
future-oriented
university at the heart of Europe.
Centrally situated near
the major cities of Dusseldorf
and Cologne, and surrounded
by the rolling hills of the
Bergisch Land, the ‘green
university’ is workplace and
living space for more than
15,000 people.
UW’s academic disciplines
are grouped into seven
faculties spread across three
city campuses, all relatively
close to each other and conveniently
linked by the city’s
public transport system. The
interconnected buildings of
the main Grifflenberg campus
make it simple to walk in a
few minutes from the English
department to Economics,
from Physics to Chemistry,
from German Studies to History
– or from any of these to
the ‘Mensa’, the university
dining hall. At the center of
the main campus stands the
university library with more
than 1.2 million books directly
accessible to users.
With their leading-edge
research, our interdisciplinary
centers and institutes,
networked not only amongst
themselves but internationally,
make an outstanding
contribution to the national
and global reputation of the
university.
All UW degree programs
have now been integrated into
the two-tier bachelor’s and
master’s structure, thus facilitating
the international comparability
of qualifications and
enabling graduates to pursue
a career on the international
as well as national stage.
The establishment of two
specialized entities, the
Schumpeter School of Business
and Economics and the
School of Education, marks a
new step in the provision of
up-to-the-minute university
training.
The university’s wide range
of service units and facilities
for students, staff and visiting
academics includes the
Language Center, University
Sports Program, Student Advisory
and Counseling Service,
Careers Service, and a
number of programs for the
promotion of young scholars
and scientists.

city of Wuppertal. Set on
the leafy slopes of the Grifflenberg,
the main campus
enjoys a panoramic view across
the town and the surrounding
countryside of the
Bergisch Land – a perfect
environment for developing
ideas and projects that will
shape the future.
Currently some 250 professors,
almost 900 other academic
and non-academic employees,
and around 14,000
students from 90 different
countries study and research
at UW. Another 700 people
work on the administrative
side to keep the complex organization
up and running.
Success and excellence of

achievement is based
not only on knowledge and
highly developed abilities, but
also on teamwork: innovative
solutions with future impact
are generally the product of
interdisciplinary cooperation.
