ISTIADHA – Seeking refugeIstiadha is seeking refuge with Allah before starting anythingwhere concentration is required. An imperative seeker moves towards a protector. We haveexamples of this in the Hijra and also the invitation of ImamHusayn (A.S.) by the people to Kufa.فَئِرَا قَشَؤْدَ‏ اىْقُشِآَُ‏ فَبسِزَعِزْ‏ ثِبىئِّ‏ ٍَِِ اىشَُِّطَبُِ‏اىشَّجٌُِِ‏So when you recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from theaccursed Shaitan, (Qur’an, 16:98)Why is Allah asking us to seek refuge? Do they not then reflect on the Quran? Nay, on the heartsthere are locks. There are 4 pillars of Istiadha, according to Adabus Salaa byAyatullah Khomeini (A.R.). 3 of these are: Al- Mustaidh – One who seeks refuge.‣ Al- Musta’aadh bihi – The one with whom refuge issought. He has to be:‣ Powerful: If you are running away from something orsomeone, you have to go to someone who is greater thanwhat you are running away from.‣ Knowledgeable (has ability, strategy and knowledge ofwhat you are scared of).www.qfatima.com Page 11
