_____________________________________________________________________________________________GLOSSARYDefinitions, Interpretations, and Examples Relating To Motor Vehicle andOther Road Vehicle <strong>Crash</strong>esAccess Control: the condition where the right of owners or occupants of abutting land orother persons to access, light, air, or view in connection with a highway is fully orpartially controlled by public authority.Air Bag Deployed: an air bag out of its cover and protruding into the occupantcompartment. Bag is fully or partially deflated or inflated.Alcohol/Drug Suspected: officer suspects drug or alcohol use by person.Alcohol/Drug Involvement: officer’s assessment of whether alcohol or other drug usewas suspected or demonstrated to be present by test for any vehicle driver or nonmotoristin the crash.Alcohol: the percent of Blood Alcohol Content (BAC).Alignment: the geometric characteristics or layout of a roadway. Alignment is usuallysubdivided into horizontal and vertical alignment.Ambient Light: the type of light that exists at the time of a motor vehicle crash.Angle – Manner of Impact: a crash where two vehicle impact at an angle. For example,the front of one vehicle impacts the side of another vehicle.Animal in Roadway: living beings which have the capacity for movement and motorresponse to stimulation but are not a human being. If a motor vehicle strikes an animalother than a domestic animal and harm results only to the animal, the event is not amotor vehicle collision.Approaching or Leaving Vehicle: physical movement in the direction of or in the directionaway from the vehicle.At Intersection but No Crosswalk: at an area which contains a crossing or connection oftwo or more roadways not classified as a driveway access but without the street crossingdistinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing by lines or other markings on the surface ofthe roadway.Auxiliary Lane: the portion of the roadway adjoining the through traveled way for parking,speed change, turning, storage for turning, weaving, truck climbing, or for otherpurposes supplementary to through traffic movement.Backing: a start from a parked or stopped position in the direction of the rear of thevehicle.Barrier: a device which provides a physical limitation through which a vehicle would notnormally pass and is designed to contain or redirect an errant vehicle.GLOSSARY_____________________________________________________________________________________________<strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> DMV-349 <strong>Crash</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>Instruction</strong> <strong>Manual</strong> Page 71
