_____________________________________________________________________________________________TrafficwayTrafficway: the entire width between property lines, or other boundary lines, of every wayor place, of which any part is open to the public for purposes of vehicular travel as amatter of right or custom.Transport Collision: any collision involving a device designed primarily for, or being usedat the time primarily for, conveying persons or goods from one place to another. Inclassifying collisions which involve more than one kind of transport, the following order ofprecedence should be used:1. Aircraft2. Watercraft3. Motor vehicle4. Railway train5. Other road vehicleThis means that a collision involving aircraft and a motor vehicle or a watercraft and amotor vehicle will not be classified as a motor vehicle collision.Trapped: persons who are mechanically restrained in the vehicle by damaged vehiclecomponents as a result of a crash.Truck Tractor (Bobtail): a motor vehicle consisting of a single motorized transport devicedesigned primarily for pulling semi-trailers.Truck/Trailer: a motor vehicle combination consisting of a single-unit truck and a trailer(a vehicle designed for carrying property and so constructed that no part of its weightrests upon or is carried by the towing road vehicle).Underride/Override: an underride refers to a vehicle sliding under another vehicle duringa crash. An override refers to a vehicle riding up over another vehicle. Both can occurwith a parked vehicle.Unit: any motor vehicle, pedestrian, pedalcyclist, moped or other road vehicle, excludingrailway vehicles.Unstabilized Situation: a set of events not under human control. It originates whencontrol is lost and terminates when control is regained or, in the absence of persons whoare able to regain control, when all persons and property are at rest.Utility Pole: a pole or post constructed for the primary function of supporting an electricline, telephone line or other electrical-electronic transmission line or cable.Van/Enclosed Box: a single-unit truck, truck/trailer, or tractor/semitrailer having anenclosed body integral to the frame of the vehicle.Vehicle Authorized Speed Limit: the posted speed limit for the type of vehicle beingdriven – take into account that the limit might be different, for example, for a truck and apassenger car.Vehicle Body Type: code used in the Vehicle Identification Number to indicate thegeneral configuration or shape or a vehicle distinguished by characteristics such asnumber of doors, seats, windows, roof line, hard top or convertible._____________________________________________________________________________________________Page 84North Carolina DMV-349 Crash Report Instruction Manual
_____________________________________________________________________________________________Vehicle License Plate NumberVehicle License Plate Number: the number or other characters, exactly as displayed, onthe registration plate or tag affixed to the vehicle. For combination trucks, vehicle platenumber is obtained from the power unit or tractor.Vehicle Maneuver/Action: what the vehicle was doing prior to the crash.Vertical Alignment: the profile or elevation view of a roadway. Vertical alignment isdescribed in terms of grades (uphill or downhill) and crest or sag curves.Warning Signs: signs used to warn traffic of existing or potentially hazardous conditionson or adjacent to a road.Weight Rating of Power Unit of the Truck: a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is avalue specified by the manufacturer for a single-unit truck, truck tractor or trailer, or thesum of such values for the units which make up a truck combination.Work Zone: a segment of the roadway marked to indicate that construction,maintenance, utility or intermittent work is being performed.GLOSSARY_____________________________________________________________________________________________North Carolina DMV-349 Crash Report Instruction Manual Page 85
