This trickle became asmall stream after AC 974, whenThyatian and Minrothaddan interestsreached Littonia, and began the process<strong>of</strong> opening that kingdom to the KnownWorld.Wishing to emulate Littonia’s apparentsuccess on his own terms, King KaarloTaavinen formally opened <strong>Kaarjala</strong> to theoutside world in AC 990, but little hasresulted thus far. <strong>The</strong> king’s detractorshave used this as pro<strong>of</strong> that <strong>Kaarjala</strong> canstand alone; but others have pointed toominous political developments inNorwold, as well as strange activity inthe unsavory region <strong>of</strong> Tuonela, as signsthat <strong>Kaarjala</strong> may soon need theassistance <strong>of</strong> the outside world if it is tosurvive.<strong>Kaarjala</strong>n TimelineBC 3000: <strong>The</strong> Great Rain <strong>of</strong> Firedestroyed Old World settlements inwhat is now upper Norwold.BC 2400: <strong>The</strong> Saamari, a nomadicpeople <strong>of</strong> the tundra and taiga, settledKainuu in eastern Borea.BC 2000: <strong>The</strong> Saamari progressed toBronze Age technology. Those thatretained their nomadic lifestylesbecame the Vaarana.BC 1800: Ilmarinen discovered a system<strong>of</strong> runic magic, with which he builtmany useful magic items. Hespent the remainder <strong>of</strong> his reigncleansing Isanmaa.BC 800: <strong>The</strong> <strong>Kingdom</strong> <strong>of</strong> Isanmaa wasat its peak, and humanoid tribes paidtribute to the Saamari kings.BC 572: <strong>The</strong> Borean Campaign endedwith the rout <strong>of</strong> Isanmaa’s army andthe death <strong>of</strong> Prince Aarne.BC 550: Humanoids tribes rose upagainst the Saamari and soweddissension within the realm.BC 500: Isanmaa’s power waned in theface <strong>of</strong> resurgent humanoid attacks.BC 400: Lovaara, a beautiful butresentful sorceress, was swayed bythe promises within her dark dreams.She developed additional powers andformed a fellowship.BC 390: Lovaara and her followersstaged a revolt in southern Isanmaa.BC 381: Isanmaa’s armies were alreadyembroiled in numerous border wars,and they were caught <strong>of</strong>f guard whenLovaara’s followers staged a revoltwith the aid <strong>of</strong> humanoids. KingTuomo fell in battle soon afterwards.BC 375: Lovaara consolidated much <strong>of</strong>Isanmaa into her own dark realm.She ignored the thousands <strong>of</strong> refugeesthat fled north with the help <strong>of</strong> theVaarana.BC 350: Lovaara attacked the remainingSaamari and Vaarana holdings in thenorth.BC 315: Ilmarinen was reborn into one<strong>of</strong> the Vaarana clans as the greathunter, Lemminkainen. Lovaara’sreach crept steadily northwards.BC 285: Lemminkainen led theremnants <strong>of</strong> Isanmaa in a stealthycampaign to hinder Lovaara. <strong>The</strong>counter-attack killed many humanoidsand checked Lovaara’s advances.BC 277: Lemminkainen breachedLovaara’s citadel in a costly raid thatwounded the sorceress, stripped her<strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> her powers, and put her t<strong>of</strong>light. <strong>The</strong> humanoids fell intoquarreling disarray.BC 275: <strong>The</strong> Automaton reappeared andcounseled Lemminkainen to lead theSaamari to a new home in the east.<strong>The</strong>y stumbled into the hidden realm<strong>of</strong> Pojaara, but the Vaarana remainedbehind to protect their lands. Afterissuing prophetic orders, the hero andthe Automaton disappeared.BC 260: <strong>The</strong> Saamari interpreted thedestruction <strong>of</strong> Alinor as a sign and leftPojaara.8
