SPECIAL RULES for KAARJALA: HYPOTHERMIAThis section provides optional rulesdealing with the effects of hypothermia –a condition arising when the body’stemperature drops below the level neededto function normally. Activity andmotion in a cold environment are key tokeeping warm. If a person lacks theenergy required to stay active, he or shebecomes sluggish and less able to fightoff the numbing effects of intense cold.Hypothermia ChecksA hypothermia check is performed bysaving vs. Death Ray, with any bonusesor penalties due to Constitution applied. The table below lists situations that maywarrant a hypothermia check, but it is notexhaustive. Multiple conditions incur acumulative -1 penalty, and checks aremade at the most rapid rate. The refereecan consider mitigating factors, such asjust-below-freezing temperatures, inadjusting the check and/or its results.ConditionStanding idle… in cold water… in frigid water… in snow (buried)In a blizzardStarving*Not restedNot protected**Poorly protected**Well protected**CheckEvery4 hours1 turn1 rd1 hour1 hour4 hours4 hours1 turn1 hour1 dayAdjustments (Cumulative) PenaltyLacking protection category -1per 10°C (18°F)-1below freezing* Eating regularly is essential toproviding the energy necessary to keepmoving and sustain bodily functions. Aperson is considered starving if they havenot eaten in the preceding 8 hours (i.e.checks at hours 8, 12, 16, etc.). For everyfour hours beyond the first eight, penalizethe check -1 but ignore frostbite resultsuntil collapsed.** Proper protection is defined asinsulated boots, suitable winter clothing, shelter from the elements, and a goodblanket for sleeping. The latter two areonly applicable during rest periods.Protection is poor if more than one ofthese is lacking. While sleeping, a single check is madefor the night and frostbite effects aremultiplied by 4 if sheltered, 8 ifunsheltered. In addition to the conditions listedabove, injuries impair a hypothermiacheck due to the additional strain theyplace on a person’s body.Hit Points Remaining Penalty51-75% -126-50% -21-25% -4The Effects ofHypothermiaIf a character fails a hypothermia check, the referee should roll d20, plus all checkmodifiers, and consult the table below. Itshould be noted that once a hypothermiacheck fails, all future checks fail until theconditions which triggered the initialfailure have been eliminated for 3d4hours.d20+mod. Roll for additionaleffects each turn while hypothermic.Collapse: The character fallsunconscious and must make a Con check(per turn with penalties) to wake up. Rollfor additional effects each turn whilecollapsed, ignoring “Delirious” or“Collapse”.Delirious: The character stumblesabout for a number of turns contained inparentheses, possibly becoming lost inthe process. Reroll. Subsequent rollshave a -1 penalty.Frostbite: The character suffersfrostbite damage equal to the amount inparentheses. In addition, the charactersuffers the following attribute penaltiesuntil aid is obtained: Str -2, Int -2, Wis -2, Dex -2, Con -2, MV reduced by 10%.Successive frostbite results producecumulative penalties.Using the Rules - An ExampleWhile traveling the Autuasmaa Plain,Paavo (Con 11) is caught in a suddensnowstorm and cannot find a nearby safehaven. He wears a heavy fur cloak andboots but has no bedroll or blanket. Hestarts looking for a cave and after a fewturns he finds nothing. The referee rulesthat it is time for a hypothermia check: itis -20°C (-2) amid a snowstorm (-1), andPaavo has no shelter (-1) – a total penaltyof -4. The character makes his check andcontinues searching unaffected. Helocates a large cave in nearby hill, andtakes shelter while the blizzard ragesoutside.Paavo grows hungry as four hours pass, but he ate the last of his rations 12 hoursago that morning. The referee calls foranother check: It is only -5°C in the cave(no penalty), but Paavo is hungry (-1),and the referee decides he has been idle (-1). He makes the check (-2 penalty), butis growing tired. The player decides that Paavo mustrest, requiring another check beforewaking 8 hours later: At that time, Paavois famished having not eaten in 24 hours(-4) and has been idle (-3), had no blanket(-1), and the temperature dropped to -15°C (-1) for a total of -9. He fails theinitial check and may be sufferinghypothermia. The referee rolls for effects; a 14, or 5after reduced by the -9 penalty. Althoughthe result is “delirious”, the referee rulesthat Paavo merely falls into a deepersleep, but must roll again with anadditional -1 penalty. The result is 2 (12-10), and Paavo developed frostbite overnight, losing 12 (4x3) hit points andsuffering several penalties to hisattributes. Unfortunately he only had 11hit points, and weeks later his frozencorpse is discovered by an adventuringparty.12
