PERSONALITIESEino Mäki: NM. Eino runs theWhite Swan Inn in Kaarja, which hasbeen a popular stopover for both localand foreign adventurers for several years.A great deal <strong>of</strong> information comes to hisattention.Iiro Juhala: NM, Int 17, C. Iiro isthe king’s advisor on political and foreignaffairs, but he was swayed by emissaries<strong>of</strong> the Rimal Hag years ago. He feeds theking false information that makes<strong>Kaarjala</strong> look backward and unprepared,thus strengthening his impatience andjealousy. He also goads the king intoinvading Itämaa, while discouraging anymoves against Tuonela, describing suchan expedition as requiring great effortwith no gain. Iiro appears middle-aged,but in truth the man is 137 years old – agift from the Rimal Hag.Kalle Päätalo: F16. In his youth,Kalle adventured extensively as far southas Littonia and Alpha, and he now enjoysa comfortable retirement in Kaarja.Although untitled, his reputation as adaring warrior commands considerablerespect. Kalle knows a great deal aboutthe lands <strong>of</strong> the far north, as well as thepurported locations <strong>of</strong> several treasures.Heroes and HeelsPekka Outinen: F5, Str 18, AL L.Pekka is a warrior who loves his nationdeeply – especially everything outside <strong>of</strong>Kaarja. He fears that his people will losetheir way if they abandon their values,which he suspects is the secret goal <strong>of</strong> thesmall foreign presence in the country.Equipment: battle axe +2, +3 vs. goblinsTönis Ruus: <strong>F10</strong>, Str18, Con17,Dex6. Tönis cherishes his freedom andhas fought giants, Shonaks, Lietuvans,Qeodhans, and <strong>Kaarjala</strong>ns – anyone whohas attempted to take his and his fellows’land. Should war come to Itämaa, it islikely that Tönis would take charge andcoordinate the local militia.Equipment: two-handed sword +3Mádes <strong>of</strong> the Broken Skis: F3.Mádes is a Vaarana hunter familiar withthe southwestern lands. Two winters ago,his skis broke while enroute to <strong>Kaarjala</strong>,yet Mádes survived hypothermia and thehoarfrost creatures <strong>of</strong> Tuonela to reachthe protective warmth <strong>of</strong> the Sampo.Hánno the Eight-Fingered: F16,Str 15, AL C. Hánno lost two <strong>of</strong> hisfingers during a skirmish with Shonakwarriors 20 years ago. He was forced tolearn to wield his sword with his lefthand, yet his injury has not blunted hisenthusiasm for battle, nor has it madehim more cautious. <strong>The</strong> Vaarana warrior<strong>of</strong>ten wanders the Everwinter Lands insearch <strong>of</strong> worthy opponents and glory.Gáddjá <strong>of</strong> the Roaring River:No22, Int 15, Wis 16. Gáddjá is a seniornoaid <strong>of</strong> the northern Vaarana clans andkeeper <strong>of</strong> the White Siedi, one <strong>of</strong> thegreat holy places <strong>of</strong> her people. Shespends much <strong>of</strong> her time communingwith spirits, and has been warned that anancient evil that threatened her peoplelong ago is resurging. Gáddjá is nowsearching for likely heroes.Heikki Laaksonen, Vapaaherra:3HD, C. Heikki is a middle-aged manwho claims descent from a family thatheld estates near the lost village <strong>of</strong>Lovajärvi. He spends much <strong>of</strong> his timein Kaarja, agitating for greater vigilancein the south. In truth, Heikki wascaptured shortly after the fall <strong>of</strong>Lovajärvi, and converted into a zombieby the Rimal Hag. She now uses him asa puppet to stir up strife; she sees andhears everything he does.Esko Yrjönen, Smith <strong>of</strong>Polvijärvi: C12, Wis 16. Esko is thesecret leader <strong>of</strong> the Followers <strong>of</strong> theForge. He is concerned about theunsavory things stirring in Tuonela; butsees little action from the king, whileforeign adventurers tramp about.Convinced by Tove Saikkonen that thecontinued foreign presence will lead hisflock astray, Esko has begun speakingout against them.Lasse Saikkonen, Vapaaherra:F7. Lasse owns a small, declining estatesouth <strong>of</strong> Rovaniemi. His father ran upimpressive gambling debts upon hisdeath, forcing Lasse to sell much <strong>of</strong> theland to pay them; the remainder is toomarginal to be <strong>of</strong> any use, and itsproximity to Tuonela has driven manypeople away. Depressed over his loss <strong>of</strong>status, he turned to alcohol for solace.His wife, Tove, runs what remains <strong>of</strong> hisestate.Tove Saikkonen, Vapaaherratar:NW, Int 16, AL C. Tove is aschemer who dreams <strong>of</strong> power. She isdisgusted by her husband’s apathy overhis reduced circumstances. She wasapproached by spies <strong>of</strong> the Rimal Hag,who claimed that their mysterious patronwould grant her great power if she servedthem. Tove now stirs up trouble in thesouth by spreading rumors about theforeign adventurers’ intentions.Hrah-andurr: Lupin F7, Str18.Hrah-andurr the leader <strong>of</strong> a lupin pack <strong>of</strong>reindeer herders in the western tundra.His name – roughly “Bear Dog” – waswon by defeating a grizzly bear unarmed.Shigath: Go11, C. Shigath is theGoblin King <strong>of</strong> the Yrgun. He dreams <strong>of</strong>a leading a great goblin nation from thefortified Winter Peaks, and he has donewell thus far in unifying the Yrgun. Hisgreatest opponents are the kobolds to hissouth and the northern Shonaks.Kwinn: F7, Str18, Con18, Wis18, N.<strong>The</strong> mighty Kwinn is an outcast Shonakhunter and tracker whose familiarity withthe north country has made him a usefulmercenary. He has contacts with his ownpeople, <strong>Kaarjala</strong>ns, Littonians, Qeodhans,even Viaskodans and the halflings <strong>of</strong>Leeha. Kwinn is recognizable in hisheavy seal-fur coat and a totemicnecklace holding four small skulls.Equipment: spear+3, +5 vs. seals andwhalesJenna Huusko: Kant5, Cha17, Dex18. Jenna is a well recognized kanteleerwho travels <strong>Kaarjala</strong> providing song andmirth for food and coin. She issympathetic to the plight <strong>of</strong> the Followers<strong>of</strong> the Forge – and has composed a fewsongs on their behalf – but she isotherwise unlikely to engage with them atthe risk to her career.Sune: Dr 17. Sune is Norwold’sranking druid for much <strong>of</strong> theAutuasmaa. She is opposed to thecontinued existence <strong>of</strong> the Great Sampoand actively lobbies other regionalhierophants for a vote <strong>of</strong> confidence indestroying the device. Her most vocalopponent is Hegan, the Vaaranaarchdruid over the other half <strong>of</strong> theAutuasmaa, and the one in which theSampo resides.23
